View Full Version : quick question...
I want to try and reach 3.6 on my conroe, is it OK to go over 1.5vcore for a little bit just to see how it runs or is that too much voltage for the cpu? ambient temps in my room are freeezing, its a perfect time to try it out

If it's staying cool I'd say it's okay. The usual rule is +15% so you're only slightly outside of that.
dont conroes run at 1.3525 so 15% would be like 1.555vcore? im not out of that at 1.5...

I'd try up to 1.65vcore for benching... you can run 1.55vcore daily if your temps are 60C or less on load.

At this point in the Core2's life we just do not have a good answer to that question. In past architectures it has been found that +.2V has been a good air cooled maximum. However, the Northwood Pentium 4 which had a default core of ~1.55V had a characteristic called "SNDS" (Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome) where 1.7V or higher could and did bring about many deaths of this CPU.
It took some time to find this out as CPU's were dying at very early stages (three months, six months, nine months....etc...etc...).
Conroe just has not been around long enough for anyone to gain a CPU pathology, meaning possible deviations from normal CPU reactivity.
well, my ambients are so low right now, my load temps at 3.4ghz &1.45vcore are under about 49-50c and im wearing three layers. I went ahead and did some experimenting with my puny freezer 7 pro and found a pretty regular pattern for my cpu. after 3.4ghz, for every 100mhz increase (stable increase) I need to pump +.05vcore into the cpu. So really, if I had watercooling, my max would be 3.6ghz (sigh) at 3.6ghz, my cpu score for 3dmark 05 was more than double that of my old a64 @ 2.5ghz. Very impressive. Perhaps for now, it would be a wise choice to keep the voltages down a bit until we see people's conroes frying at a certain voltage.

That A64 - was it an X2?

Yes, it's a bit of a crap shoot at this time. I do doubt a return of SNDS with Core2 though but that's opinion.
I'm pumping 1.37V through mine to get 3.2GHz. I can get to 3.6 but I'm just not willing to drive 1.5V through it along with 57C load temps.. It's just a too unknown variable. However, they're so damned cheap that it's not all that big a deal anyway.
Great temps by the way.

is everyone using Intel TAT when they are giving their temps? I run my 6600 all day with 1.55vcore @ 3600mhz. It never even hiccups. I load out at 52c in Intel TAT with my water setup.

Yes, I'm using TAT. Remember that you are running water. LOL A load of 52 under water and I'm loading at 55/52 under a BigTyphoon.

Anyeah your running a 6400 at 3.2 with what voltage? Im loading my cpu with TAT, your loading with orthos. @3.3 I load out 36c running orthos. and hit a max of 45c loading with TAT. Big temp diff between the 2.
