View Full Version : Making FSX install in Win2k
Well, that was a colossal waste of time and bandwidth
It won't install on Win2k. Does anybody know if there is a way around that?

Go to run and type the path of the executable and use the /a flag
Should look like this
C:\imapathtothefile\setup.exe /a
That aught to work assuming 2k isnt missing any needed dll files.

All that appears to do is create an MSI file for network installations of the software. Any other suggestions?

It did what? :eh?:
That should have turned off version checking..... okay then I'll do more digging.
*edit*
This is really weird I'm guessing MS changed the /a flag so it doesnt turn off version checking since this allowed you to make AoE III work on win 2K.

Interesting from what I can tell now atleast appears that microsoft games arnt using the same installer accross the board. The MS flight sim uses these switches "flags" linked below.

My guess is at this point that not all MS games follow the same installer standard.I dont have any real way to confirm this since I dont own and MS games from the past year.Any one?
I've moved these posts from the other thread to start a new one. No use in cluttering up the other one.
I'll take a screenie of what it does.
edit: screenies.

That happens first. Normal install screen. Clicking on the 'More Options' button does nothing.

Then it moves to this screen. If I click 'Install' and select the default drive, it looks like it does something (lots of HD activity) then it crashes out.

Okay I'm downloading the game now and putting windows 2000 on my secondary game box I'll see what I find.
I asked reduc900 about it (seeing as he's the resident MS expert) and he said there's pro'lly no way to do it :(
I was futzing around w/ the setup.ini, thinking the actual checking procedure may be in there, but I'm not sure.

Theres gotta be a way but it'll take me more time.I dont have the software with me but I've become new novell guy at work and I have a program I use to distribute software.Well it also tells EVERYTHING the program does with registery, dll files,etc... I can grab it monday see what Flight sim X is not seeing "in theory" on the 2k box and what its accessing on XP.We might be able to hodgpodge something together to make it work ;). Kang

One question...Does it crash? Or just appear to do nothing? When I install Age of Empires in this fashion it appeared to be doing nothing, but then it asked for the other discs after a while...appeared to do nothing then it finished. All I had to do was add a .dll to the folder it installed in and voila. Now I'm trying with FSX and it's doing the same crap, but I'm assuming it will take a while longer so I'll update you when it's done if that happens to be before work.

Hmm...It does appear to be making an image of the installer though. That may present a problem if the OS check is in that as well, which I don't see any reason for it not to be. Oh, well I'll just wait it out and see, it might make it more simple to bypass if it's on the HDD anyways.

Kang, I'm eager to hear what you have to say about this. You and I seem to be pretty confident that this will work, but I don't really know where to start. I really don't have the time to mess around with the files at the moment so I hope you can figure something out. After all the stupid game costed $50 just to find out I couldn't use it for no reason except greed.

I got the game installed on the system but it cannot run. The error I recieve when I run the fsx.exe file is:
' The procedure entry point CreateActCtxA could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll. '
Is this actually important in running the program or is it just another obstacle to getting this running on Win2k?

Hey how did you actually manage to get it installed? If you can catch me up to speed we can try n work something out together. Sounds like FSX is calling a procedure dealing with the activation of the product.

I ran the installer with /a. It won't do much, but your DVD drive will be blinking for a while then it will ask for the next disk. After it's all done, the files will be in /Program Files/Microsoft Games/Flight Simulator X. I then some errors corresponding to kernel32.dll. I ran filemon and regmon to find out what files are being requested and needed to download a couple .dll's. I messed with the registry a bit but had no success, just changes in the error message when I click on the fsx.exe icon. Let me know if you need more info, hopefully you are more informed about this type of thing than I am. I am stuck.
Oh yeah, I did a bit of reading on 'CreateActCtx' and it seems to be a WinXP only procedure.
