View Full Version : i guess he stole my games

I loaned FEAR and BF2 to this guy a few months ago, but I've called him, texted him, asked him when i've seen him in person, etc, and he still wont give them back. I dont know where he lives, but I really want my games back. What should I do? (serious answers please, i am fully capable of coming up with stupid ideas on my own.)
Wait wait wait. Hold on a second here.
You're telling me that you took games that you had purchased, and loaned them to a guy you barely knew, complete with CD Keys, manuals, the whole shebang, and now he won't give them back to you?
First, has he outright said he's not going to give them back to you? If so, do the following:
Call EA Games and Sierra, and tell them that you lost your CDs for the games, and you were hoping that there was some way they could help you out. They may send you new discs, but they'll pro'lly require a Proof-of-purchase for each game (a receipt, a credit card statement, bank statement etc) and some I.D. so they know who you are. For a nominal fee, along with the proof-of-purchase, they may send you new discs for each game, and new keys, too.
While you're at it, ask them to flag the CD Keys for each game as stolen, so the jerkoff you loaned them to cannot play them online anymore.
However, if both EA and Sierra won't do this for you, you may just be stuck trying to track this guy down and try getting your games back the hard way. If he won't give them back, then all I can suggest to you is that you take this as an expensive lesson, and go out and purchase the games again, and this time don't let people you barely know borrow them!

If you know his name and address (which you can get from his phone number by doing a reverse lookup) File a small claims case so he gets a summons to appear in court. You can sue him for the price of the games plus court costs. You need to prove to a judge that the games were yours to begin with.

id say walk away... learn from it ..
When I was in middle school, I loaned some N64 games to a guy I didn't know so well and he wouldn't give them back, then he moved away. Now I don't let anyone borrow games unless they're good friends.

Despite SSS is quite good at handling actual fraud, I don't think he likes handling cases where negligence is involved. (Not a smack down, just how I see it.)
Your best bet at getting them back through the legal system is small claims. I'd try to talk to him first, take it up with his parents (as appropriate), etc.

This is the best advice here. You lost your games, it was a stupid decision to loan them out. I wish I could have learned the same lesson with something as cheap as video games...
When I was 24, I gave a convertible Volkswagen that I just finished restoring to a friend of a friend of mine to "try it out" because he was thinking of buying it...possibly.
I never got the car back, he destroyed it before I was able to get registration or insurance on it. I lost about $7,000.
You got off easy.

I probably should walk away from this. I knew him pretty well, but when i loaned him the games he just kinda went to work somewhere else after having them a week, and i called him and stuff about it and now he won't talk to me anymore. I could find his house with the reverse look up, but I dont want to go to court or anything. I guess I should have been more careful. At least they are a bit cheaper now. If I run into him, I'll try to get them back, or ask him to pay me for them, but im probably not gonna see him.
Thanks guys.

Okay out of all seriousness, here is what you do. You go to your nearest sporting goods store, purchase the biggest and heaviest bat you can find. Bring it to work/school where it is taht you see him, and your games will drop out like vomit!!
Edit:
SERiously though, i work in this store where i was going to sell my palm tx pda to one of the supervisors. Thinking that he would definitely pay me, i gave it to him before he had the money. Stupid me, a month comes by and after 30 different excuses each time, HE STILL DIDNT HAVE THE MONEY. So i go, hey bro, i want my tx back if your not going to pay me for it or i'm going to make your time working here very difficult. And he goes fine fine, next day he brought it back and i sold the tx the next day to someone that called me off craigslist. Tip for you ppl, never lend games to coworkers, or anything for that matter.

Don't loan anything you can't afford to lose. Period. In my experience I've noticed people rarely value something they haven't earned.

If you file a small claims over a video game you will be laughed at. its not worth it...

No thats not true, this is exactly what it was for. It costs just a processing fee, if the defendant doesn't show up they send a guy to his house and they have the authority to take whatever they want to equal the debt. If they have nothing, it will be on record at the courthouse and when this guy shows up for court for some other crime he will most likely commit they can add this to his debt.
"Been there done that."
Its either that or the old fasioned way.(Baseballbat):D EDIT (Joking)
By the way I can barely get things back from my own family. If thats any consolation.

Yeah, that's exactly what he needs to do! I can see the headline now . . .
'Gamer beats other gamer to death over video game'
Jack Thompson would be on it like stink on cheese.
That was meant as tongue in cheek, since I thought I gave the most reasonble solution first.

Forget Jack Thompson, this is a job for JACK RYAN!!!! LOL!!
Anyway, not to be an a-hole or anything but it was your fault for being careless with who you loan stuff to. BTW can I borrow $100?

Oni, that's already happened in Korea. I think it was for some MMORPG item loaned then sold. I'm guessing WoW. But maybe it was EQ or RO.
Crazy Koreans.
Man... that makes me think now... I just loaned my Xbox 360 to a coworker.

Yeah, I know. The murder was also very very brutal if I remember the report.
However, Jack Thompson doesn't have jurisdiction in Korea. He can only screw us North Americans.

asked him when i've seen him in person
next time you see him, just ask him, if he says no just walk away and hide for a little while. He will leave and then follow him home. Make sure you bring a cell phone with you.
When he gets to his house (at his front door) demand the games back or you will call the cops then and there. Follow through with it too if he doesnt give them back, sure the cops probably wont do anything about it, but it might just scare him enough to give them back. This sounds a bit like you are both fairly young so i am sure he will give them back at this point.
I had someone "borrow" and never give back my PS1 games once back in middle school.. My friends 21 year old older brother came with me and sure enough, i got them back. Best moment of my life thus far.

Haha, i should put my paintball gun to some use.
Oh, and I'd kill someone over an electronic 1337 sword, definitely. That is SO worth it. Verrryyy smart decision right there, i bet he's glad he took his time to do that.
