View Full Version : Not getting why TB drives cost so much...
I don't know why it took so long but I've just realized that TB drives are so much money per space for no reason. I mean you can buy a decent hard drive now for under $200 now and get 500GB, and have it be internal, while looking for a TB drive with a close response time costs about $500. It makes no sense (to me atleast) that they have 2TB drives for $1000 with ~10ms seek times and put it in a beast of a case because it's external, when for the same price you can raid together 5 500GB ~4ms timed drives, have 1.5TB AND keep in in in the case (unless you have a small case). Just thought I'd point this out and get some of you guys' opinions.
u can buy 4 seagate perp drives for $320 and you'll have 1tb

But might I ask what 500Gig drive has a 4ms? None that I know of unless its a Scsi drive and don't think they make them that big and definatly not that cheap.

Yes, when comparing them to SCSI drives they aren't all that expensive.

Are you sure these TB dirves aren't just enclosures with two raided 500/750gb drives?

They should be raided drives since I don't think theres anyone bigger then a 750 out currently.

I'd rather not have 1tb+ drives right now. I'd rather thanve smaller 250gb or 300gb drives - whether they're raided or not. There's no point in putting ALL of your data on one drive - so that when it goes you lose it ALL.

I've got 3 200s and 2 320s and only about 300Gbs full...
What are all these people buying the 750's filling them up with?

Its mostly because of supply and demand. There arent too many TB drives out yet, thus the ones which are out will be costing you a arm and a leg.

they cost more because people will pay more. Being in sales I get the advantage (yeah, right) of seeing what joe sixpack is looking for. Since computers are cheap (relatively) to replace, joe is taking more risks with what joe has.
Joes home-made pron collection doesnt fit on joes 80gb hard drive anymore. Joe goes to the store and buys the biggest they have - i think we only have the 320's right now.
Joe would rather install it himself now, than pay the dude at the counter $50 to do it for him, because, well, frankly thats almost half the cost of the drive.
Then bill wants a bigger hard drive. Joe diddnt manage to kill his computer, so joe offers to save bill the $50 and install it for bill.
But bill is a big player, he goes online and gets the biggest hard drive he can find, a 750gigger. Joe installs it, and once again nothing goes wrong. (because installing hard drives is easy, and hard to break stuff)
Then wanda (joes wife) gets a tax return or something and buys a DSLR, and can now take 5 pictures a second at 8 megs a picture. She has the money, and she has the balls in the family- she tells joe 'get me the biggest hard drive on the market!)
joe complys, and he sees a 1tb drive for 5 times as much as a 500gb. Joe obviously doesnt know anything about computers, so he buys the 1tb one.
And then he winds up single with two kids when she finds out the hard way what happens when raid 0 fails.

200 gigs of my 1.5 TB are filled with pictures my dad and I have taken. I have a tv tuner in my comp that takes up a lot of gigs. Also, I save every DVD and CD I have seen or listened to on my comp. Disk images take up a lot of space. I have entire runs of multi season shows on my comp that take up a lot of space. I have to delete stuff all the time.

Oh thats a sweet idea I could watch any episode of stargate whenever I want without pulling out the DVD's :) Only at a cost of 378Gig for all 9 seasons I likey :)

Not even :) I have all 9 plus half the 10th
The first 2 seasons of House and the first couple of episodes of Heroes on a 120GB hdd and stil lhave 15GB of space left :)

I got all the DVD's so I'd just rip that to the HDD. But even when I recorded things on my other PC it was about 2.5Gig per hour in mpeg format as well.
