This would be too funny except the major players are dead serious. Here's an amusing succinct comment I found over at the Daily Tech.

Yes, and Winter's almost here

This is great news. For $300, I can buy a great 1300watt psu and then spend the amount of money I would on a new heating system on these cards in SLI mode. I'm hoping they have a Quad Configuration as well because I need to exhaust the entire side of the case directly into my AC Ducts and I need the extra fan power to push it upstairs, and I want it to be as warm and toasty as possible. I may just have to put all silent heat sinks and setup a warning monitory system to generate EVEN MORE HEAT and then use an external exhaust fan to whiff it up into the house.

I am very happy that such technology can provide true comfort for the family room in the upstairs where we will stream video to for the family visits.
In the basement, where this will be, I may have to wear shorts to keep from sweating too much, but it will be worth it.

The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition doesn't, by itself, generate the amount of heat to warm more than an entire basement, but Intel Technology together with Nvidia push the Thermal Envelope to new heights, and I thank them, and my cat thanks the.

I think something is majorly wrong with Vista in that most people, assuming that they will buy Vista, are already contemplating heavily how to dual boot with XP. Before, it was more or less "toss the old and in with the new" but now it is moreso "well, at least I can boot back to XP if I actually want to do something".

Besides, Vista can and will majorly loose to XP at the business market. A business won't like to toss and upgrade nearly their whole computer fleet just so Word can run on Vista. Time will tell if businesses will do that or not.

Business probably won't but then again a lot never changed from 2k. Also I don't think many people are planning on duel-booting. Most people don't even know what that means. As with all things though the tech people are saying how bad it is before it comes out, just like the consoles. Once it's out and had some time to get a service pack or maybe some driver support I think most people will change their mind.

As Vista will come preloaded on next year's PCs, you can bet it will become the de facto standard OS just like XP Gold was in spite of all the complaints.

By SP1 all will be forgiven and XP will be a second class OS marketing wise.

Those video card silicon furnaces will last about as long as the PressHott did. Only long enough for a replacement to be designed and manufactured.

No Dell or any other sixpack OEM is gonna touch those. Maybe a few of the specialty gaming box builders like Falcon or Dell's Alienware division.

And many of those that do, can't spell dual boot (although every once in a while, it does feel like the OSes are Dualing, if you install windows 2nd).

After a year, XP had about 10% market penetration, even when most/all new boxes were sold with it.

I guess Vista will be similary, even when MS tries to BS everyone how much licenses they'll sell since the market is anticipating their latest and greatest so much...

All grammar aside, I am one of those people with no intention of buying Vista anything. I will use XP till the security updates run out. There is really no reason for me to do otherwise. I wonder what MS would do if Vista turns out to be a bomb on the retail shelves? I sure would love to see that happen. In fact, I'll drink to that!

I went from 95 to 98se to w2k and now XP pro.

I went with XP when I got a VLK edition that didn't insist on phoning home after I installed it. Otherwise I'd still be on w2k.

Vista RC2 is OK so far but I wouldn't pay anywhere near $400 for it.

My Xeon duallie is the only machine in my house that can run it with all the bells and whistles with no strain.

Just a bump and an open question.

Is anyone going to buy those monster DX10 video cards once they start coming out?

I think I'll just get the best AGP card that will barely exceed the CPU limits of my dual Xeons so I won't waste any money or electrical power.

I doubt it...no need to buy DX10 till "Its a must buy or left behind" thing. The more I read in detail the more I find Vista will be fine for the mass market but less so for any of us or gamers in general.

What happens with these 1300 watt graphic monsters SLI'ed on the Vista Desktop? Vista Aero is 3D, so the cards will always be running full blast. The fans will always be roaring at full speed, the noise will always be maxed and the electrical company will be REAL impressed... Or?

No, it will be like your computer running at 5% load. Aero isn't THAT GPU hungry
