Just got myself an extra 40Gig 5400rpm U-series Seagate drive today for data, mp3 and image storage. I has a thin rubber 'clamshell' around it. You can mount the drive with the rubber on, and the Seagate sticker with all the specs. etc. is also on it. But doesn't a harddrive produce heat? And doesn't rubber insulate heat?! So should I remove it?! I cannot find anything about this on the Seagate site. They only claim to have 70% less RMA's for transport and handling damages since they started to use this rubber shell. Not anywhere is it stated to remove it upon install! The thing is I have a little heatsink on my main 7200rpm drive's largest chip, and this new drive is completely covered up!!!

If you're worried about your warranty (and let's face it, that's what ALL overclockers worry about first! ), then leave it on. If you're not worried about being able to replace it later, grab a razor or very sharp knife and get cuttin'. I have a Seagate right in front of me, and it seems to be on mostly by pressure. I'm assuming you could either stretch it off, or cut it off.
