K last time i asked if stacking fans would help lower cpu temp, and the answer was no, this time i have a new idea that i believe will work cause this method would increase air flow, so tell me what you think...

Sure this would work, any more airflow is a good thing. Matbe this would let you use two quieter fans instead of one delta?

Couple of things to think about:
Wont work on all heatsinks as it must have fins. (wont work on thermoengine)
Will you have space around the heatsink for another fan? Obstructions on the board e.g capacitors may get in the way.

Otherwsie top idea & let us know how you get on!

This is an idea for a whole new heatsink which a factory would have to make, it would have to be a whole new company of heatsinks unless one of the top heatsink companies would like to take my idea and make it.

Or just take your idea & make tons of money of it:D j/k

hey, I tried the exact same thing! I use a FOP32, on a Slotket cartridge- one face of the HSF is always looking right at me, so I threw a fan on it! Looks just like your picture, but sideways.

Result- slightly louder, temps went UP!!! the added fan was blowing onto the 'sink and disrupting the airflow from the fan on top( the stock fan in the regular location).

SO, I flipped the added side fan around to pull air instead, and lo, my temps DID go down by a degree or two. It was quite a bit louder, and it was aiming right at my case window- in 3 days there was a nice new dust spot on the window caused by the new fan. So I got rid of it. Good idea tho.

Depending on the HSF I bet this has potential to work very very well. But ONLY on certain sinks, IMHO. Apparently, not mine!:)

keep the ideas flowing man-

you just gave me a new idea, k we take my heatsink idea, and we put 1 fan where it normally would be on top and we take 4 more fans and we put them on each side of the heatsink, but we put the fans so they take air out instead of blowing air in, what do you think of that idea???

If all the fans are sucking air out how is air going to get in?

BinarySuperman
11-24-01, 01:09 PM
the fan on top is blowing air in like a regular fan would do, its those 4 other fans on each side that are sucking air out, and that would cause a cycle of hot air leaving faster thus lowering cpu temps.

Ah, now I see! Not sure if it would work though. Only one way to find out, zip tie some fans on and let us know.

k im gonna go out and get 4 quiet fans and i'll tell you if i see any temp differences.

i did the experiment on the two fans (1 top, 1 side)
compare with (1 top , 2side)

didn't have 5 fans.

both of the results are 3~7 degrees C cooler than the 1 fan (default)

1 side or 2 side are very similar. didn't notice any difference.

now i am using 1 top fan and 1 side fan.
temp of my cpu Duron 750Mhz oc to 1024Mhz is 47C.
"cool" eh?:D :D :D

good stuff!

did you notice a big noise increase with all those fans, or was it not so bad?

Luie

The noice level had increased but only a little.
The two fans is still quieter than the sunon.

the two fans = (one NMB case fans, one Evercool heatsink fan)

so my idea worked out??? and if it did which idea did you use, 1 or 2 ??

yah have to think about space issuses also ya know, i mean
5 fans mounted around your cpu is gonna take up alot of space
unless you get smaller high output fans.

i mean my swiftech mc 462-a is huge and i had to modify it to fit on my mobo , it weighs in at 2 lbs. and it only has one sanyo denki fan on there and my temps are around 44 c @full load.

Cool idea - no pun intended...

I had similar idea I want to try but can not right now - need to wait for my CAK38 to arrive...

your idea is something I definitly am gonna try!

its 1 regular fan on top and 4 small fans on the sides, but i like idea number 1 better, i think if i can find a heatsink that tall and made of copper i can decrease temps by atleast 10 degrees.

a_yeap
11-26-01, 12:37 AM
10 degrees?...isn't that a bit too optimistic?

what do you think about noise and POWER and WEIGHT?...the noise made by 5 fans is gonna be pretty high, even if they are 'quiet' fans...and the power that setup would leech is gonna be pretty high...and the weight of a copper HS and 5 fans could crush the core...

Is it all worth it for 7 degrees?

BinarySuperman so my idea worked out??? and if it did which idea did you use, 1 or 2 ??

to, binary superman,

I used the 1st idea. (1 fan in the top, 1 fan at the side)

BinarySuperman

5 fans would never crush the core, plus my computer is standing up so the weight is not going into the core, i had 4 fans on my old p3 500 and i didn't even notice any noise, but i remember that the heathink was always cold when i had those 4 fans(2 fans and 2 on top of them)

the way I look at it, ANY decrease in temps is worth it, no matter how heavy\loud\ugly it may be.

you may get sick of this method after a while, you may snap off a lug or 2 from the weight, but it's all worth it in the pursuit of a little...more..speed!:D

I did something similar when I was using a heatsink (I'm watercooling my system now), but it was only by coincidence. My PSU has a two fan cooling system in it and the 80mm intake fan is only about 1.5 inches from the cpu socket. Also, my case at the time had a 80 mm chassis fan mount just above the AGP slot and below the PSU, which happened to be right by the cpu too. I put the fan in there blowing on the heatsink and the temps went down by 3-4 degrees Celsius and it was the same when I turned the fan around. I'm wondering if putting the fan back in will make any difference now that I have water cooling in... one way to find out I guess.

The side fan, was it blowing torwards or away the hsf?

Would it be better to have the CPU fan (just the one) blowing away or torwards it (default)? Just a though, as if it was blowing away the hotter air couldn't be re-circulated!!!

Luie
11-27-01, 02:27 AM
both of my fans were blowing towards the hs.
