Ok, so we've all gone through the hassle of trying to setup IP games or just join up with our friends. And then we run into some kind of cursed firewall/router issue. You should know this very well if you've ever tried to play Command and Conquer Generals.
Anyway, I stumbled upon a simple program that basically creates a virtual LAN and gives you and your buddies similar IP addresses to use. This program made it easy to finally play CC Generals with my brother and a friend, after spending hours trying to get through its nasty feelings towards routers. And port forwarding doesn't always solve it before you even try. =)
Check it out. http://www.hamachi.cc/
Hamachi is a zero-configuration virtual private networking (VPN) application.
In other words Hamachi is a program that allows you to arrange multiple computers into their own secure network just as if they were connected by a physical network cable.
Hamachi is fast, secure and simple. Its core version is also free.

Try it out and be sure to look at your own machine to see how much access other users will have to your files. You may get a surprise.
^ So you're saying whoever you hook up with on this had better be very trustworthy?

Based on that brief description above that's exactly what I would be saying. VPN = virtual private network = best means of file/print sharing across the web. Either they should be trust worthy or you should either set passwords on your shares or turn off file sharing altogether.
Well I was thinking in terms of the potential for maliciousness, but that too. :(

The other user you let in thru Hamachi can browse your file directory, and your network. It is as if they are sitting at your desk and you left your PC logged in.
(I may be slightly off as I have not touched this product in a year, but I was shocked at the level of access that was available in XP Pro)

Upon installation, there is an option to disable services that would allow file sharing.

Ive been using this for a while too. Be careful with what files your sharing because they can see and edit them depending on ur settings. I got bored one day and started printing stuff on my friends computer.

I used to do that on everyone's computers on networks in the dorms freshman year. Hours of fun.
