I'd really recommend this router:
LINKSYS WRT54GL IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router with Linux Based Open Source Firmware - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124190)
I have it and have it running Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c (http://www.thibor.co.uk/#downloads) firmware.
:tony the tiger voice: "I think it's Grrrrrreat!"

went with this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124057
and this firmware Thibor HYPERWRT SL Thibor15c
To think I screwed around with my dlink router for over 2 years. this thing is great a little exp. but well worth it. 226 cpu and 32mb ram

I'd go with a smoothwall Box. Best way to go :)
If not, try and get a Non version 5 LINKSYS WRT54G or GS, but they are unfortunatelly hard to find in stores..

Anyone that's supported there. Ideally with lots of RAM. 16MB is minimum.
