View Full Version : Need to get some speakers running...
Hey guys,
I was wondering if you could help me out here.
Recently I discovered that my dad was keeping a set of Klipsch Heresy speakers in my garage. Being the person that I am, I immediately jumped at the opportunity and took them down from the attic.
I realized I didn't have the stuff I needed to use them though, which brings me to my question.
What do I need to use a set of Klipsch Heresy speakers with my computer/iPod/any other peripherals, with good sound quality for a farily cheap price.
Also, there are no power plugs on the back or anything, so I figure it gets the power from it's speaker cables?
Also, I need a nice set of cables, so let me know what you guys reccomend.

How many speakers do you have? if its just a pair look on craigslist for a cheap stereo receiver. Youll need a dual RCA male to 1/8" mono adaptor to plug into the output on the soundcard. As far as speaker wire is concerned, just shop around and see whats out there.
They seem like nice Speakers btu a little more info would be good. Are they the Number II's?
If so they are
8ohm 100Watt but with a 102Db 1watt/1meter
Which meens a low powerd amp could run them. I would have a look, are they in good condition? they could be worth a lot more to you and your father selling them and then getting something a little more appropriate
But I would look at somehting like my amp
Yamaha AX596 100watt Per Channel @ 8ohms
Look for anything by
Yamaha
Old Pioneer
Denon
Marantz
etc etc
Look on e-bay
For connection all you will need is a 3.5mm Stereo out to 2X Rca
They're Heresy Is I believe, in farily good condition. I haven't actually plugged them in to see how they sound, but they don't smell bad or like they've been stored for a long time, they look fantastic except for maybe a few small things with the housing. They've been in our family for awhile so I'd like to keep them under my roof.
Although they could be Heresy IIs, the Is and IIs look very similar. I'm also interested in purchasing a nice subwoofer to go with them, as I hear they're excellent for mids and highs but not so much for lows. And I mean really low. I plan on listening to all sorts of music really, but for the most part I listen to rap and hip hop which requires accurate highs and mids but the lows are a very important part. I want to be able to feel my music, really.
Thanks to those who have helped out already.

Klipsch speakers are very efficient and can be driven by a very modest amplifier. There is no need to get carried away with wattage. Also, do not waste your money on monster cables. Regular old speaker wire of a decent gauge will work just as well. Yes, Klipsch speakers are first rate. Enjoy!
A nice 50watt NAD Amp would be nice yup yup :P
Go for the sub, I love making them, you may not. Its a good way to get exactly what you want and its damn fun aswell
Making my own sub, interesting.
Is it any cheaper just to buy a manufactured subwoofer? Although I really would like to pick up a HUUUUUUUUGE woofer and shake my whole house like it was the 1994 Northridge Earthquake all over again.

I beg to differ, Monster sounds much better to me.

So does anybody have any suggestions for amplifiers I can use to power these speakers, like stuff I can buy at Good Guys or newegg?

What kind of price range are you looking at?

I would try and get a good brand second hand Stereo Amp rather than a cheap new one from New Egg etc

Craigslist would be a good place to start looking (I got most of my audio equipment through it for rediculously cheap), or grab a cheap/refurb. amp from J&R or partsexpress.com.
I'd like to spend about ~75-125 on this, or as cheap as I can get quality amp. As long as the speakers run, and I can hook up a subwoofer later, I'll be happy.
