View Full Version : Questions about a game only e6300
e6300 or e6400? Is it really worth the e6400 @ 40$ extra?
Will I really see any noticable difference between a "good" overclock on either chip. Id rather save the $ imo.
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 vS Update ASUS P5B-E @ 20$ extra?
I will only put 2 raptors in raid 0, that I already have , so why spend more on the Intel ICH8R, which seems to be the only difference, esspecially when the DS3 does great when looking at what u guys are doing.
and will this ram G.SKILL 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) do the job, The game ill be spending most of my time in is ut2k7 and guildwars so I dont think I will need the 2 gig kit. (I HOPE) Either way a second 1 gig kit is still decent performance if i have to upgrade later right?
AND
last but not least, buy now, or wait till quad cores come out, in hopes of saving some more $?
thanks in advance guys, and just so u know I have a 7900 GTO already, a great case, a 450 modstream i might have to replace, and some experiance in ocing my p4 3.0c though im a noobie still imo.

to get the most out of a e6300, you need the right ram, because it has a multi of 7. with the e6400, you get an extra multi to work with, so your ram wont have to clock as high.
myself, im glad i went with a e6300. if i had to make the choice again today, it would be between a e6300 and a e6600.
if that G.Skill is the same stuff i got (the HZs) then you should be good to go on a e6300, i have no problems running 500mhz 4-4-4-10 with 2.35v.
this is the ram

yep that's the stuff. i can run mine up to 600mhz, or ddr2-1200, with 5-5-5-15. day to day, i run 500mhz at 4-4-4-10. this is awesome ram, and it would not limit your overclock one bit with a e6300.
most people i see buying e6400's are dropping the multi down to 7x anyways, so to me it makes no sense to go with one. just save the $$ and get a e6300, or pony up for a e6600.

I actually WANTED an E6300... but it was out of stock so they proposed an E6400 at a ridiculously inflated price. Much like HBB I seem to have gotten the GOLDEN chip. Nobody I've seen (well maybe one or two people) has been able to hit the OC that I have at the volts that I have, and this is a week 24 chip! So I'd say it's DEFINATELY worth the extra cash. Tomshardware (who should always be taken with a grain of salt) did a review of the chip. It's basically 40 bucks between an E6300 and E6400, NINETY bucks between an E6400 and E6600 then it keeps going up.
An E6600 will not clock nearly as well on a DS3 because of the extra 2mb cache. But for the extra forty bucks you get a solid YARD beyond the E6300 and any clock that chip can hit you'll be able to hit it at lower volts, lower FSB, and probably lower temps.
E6400 gets my vote.
All I want to achieve with my overclock is the fun had along the way and a fast enough core 2 duo cpu to place a little sig under my name :P So if i get a avg Chip, I wont have crazy speed like you guys but ill be at least at 3.something I hope, oh yea about coolers... later on.
In games Games Prefer 1600 res, 1024 for fps and any stock core 2 duo and a stock 7900 GTO should do this, overclocking will just extend lifetime of the gamer box, um that sounds backwards but I think its true. My current Game machine is a 3.3 p4 c, it turned out the cpu was never the limit, still isnt the limit, not surprising thoguh.
About the motherboards either, or, is fine im guessing, and then do any of you think theres a real chance of significant saving by waiting till the quads come out?
im itching to build this thing, im sure you know the feeling. ^ ^
I am torn between getting a cooler like this, just 2 say i have it and cause i think its neat, http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=20692

About thinking amanda, everytime I buy something like this because I think its neat, it ends up being bleh.

pass on quad core till intel get csi and imc in c2d. if your main reason for a new rig is gaming then waiting for them to even think about multi cpu coding is going to take a while. depending on the video card your 3.3ghz p4 would and wouldnt be the bottle neck. i can say if you were running a 6600g+ on it yea the cpu is the bottleneck.

So do you recomend a AB9 at all?

i do but for certian people. you want to oc and the ab9/pro bios is still being worked on. i would suggest p5b-e/p5b-dlx/tforce 965p/965p-ds3/965p-s3

Any of the boards he recommended are fine. I think the DS3 is a nice middle ground. It's cheap and I could probably hit 600FSB right now if I was actually trying (and if I took the time to actually learn how to overclock.) Right now I can hit upwards 520 FSB without trying, so that gives you an idea of the potential. The DS3 will also be compatible with the Quadro. So when I want to upgrade three years from now I'll just get one of those and dump it in there. Not a problem.

I'd really like to see what clock HBB could get with a E6400 :p
I vote E6400
But, suggested it to rainless before he picked out the E6300 LOL
Ive been saying E6400 all along ;)

600x7... that's 4.2 ghz right? I'll give it a shot just to please my peeps. I'm on my way out the door anyway. Results later :)

Its tough to reccommened a P5B-E since it only gives 2.1 volts max on the vDimm. But with a DS3 you loose the matrix raid, and I think thats something you might want with your raptors. Have you looked at matrix raid?

I thought rev 1.02 didn't come till november. So if its 1.02g, I'd go with a P5B-E.
Is matrix raid what lets u run logical raid arrays on the same physical raid set?
if so i have the 80 gigish raptors, not going to want to partition them or what ever it is u would do in a matrix, i use network drives for storage.
I went for the 6300 and the ds3, I know it was not all the best recomendation but i think ill be more then happy with what i can get out of it, and the bigest reason was to save a little cash, and that i think a nice oc on that chip will be more then enough for the 2 games I'll use the most.
I guess ill post some results in a week or 2, thanks for all the advices u guys are the best!

DS3 and E6300 are not a bad combo....*looks at sig*...I'm running 333 fsb * 7 = 2331MHz, on stock cooler. (Soon to have a XP 90c). Did I mention I had only 1.2875 volts? So undervolted and overclocked. Got to love these beast!

Oh yeah well...
reboot, also when you get your DS3, go with the F6 bios. F7 added a new start up logo, and support for kentsfield. If you check xtremesystems a few people who have upgraded have not been able to reach the same overclock as they can with F6 or earlier bios. F8 might be out by the time you get everything. F8 *should* finally fix all of the issues that still remain with any micron (D9) based ram.

is that a normal super pi for this pc at stock?
im seeing core 0 at 34c and core 1 at 31c at idle is that normal too?
greenmaji

That should be about normal for a stock E6300 I just don't recall seeing a SPI 1M for a stock E6300.
It depends on how tweaked your ram and OS is ;)
I havent tweaked anything at all :) YeT!
This is 3DMark06 for stock and it says, I am the fastest of 16 similar systems and ranked preety high overall.

IIRC a good time for a E6600 is around 22 seconds at stock.
Come on HBB, you know you were tweaking that time some ;)

well i run a pretty stripped OS to begin with. ;) and a good defrag just after install never hurts either. :D
i might be totally wrong about my time, but i do know i was not close to 30s. :)
well superpi definatly isnt the first thing i installed, this is fully patched to sp2, and installed up to the point of daily use machine, i guess that would slow it down a little, hu! DOH?
Since it was still the fastest "similar" machine on the other bench im gonna say its got to be at least a decent chip, maybe not HBB good though <3
