I wouldn't say soon, DVD took years to drop this low and really only started it's decline onces the PS2 started to take over so everyone had a DVD player and the compitition began. Yes though Blu-Ray is a very nice format. 200GB max will be the future storage capacity on one disk and the coating on the disk can withstand much more abuse then DVD/CD coatings can meaning less money spent replacing disk.

Ya, those look nice:) But I don't think I'll buy one until they're in the $50-$100 range.

Depending on weather HD-DVD or Blu-Ray takes off thats the one I'll spend on my system when it comes down to a reasonable price (100-150 maybe preferably sub 100 range). Either way I wouldn't mind as long as there re-writable which is what I'd use it for first for backups/storage.

I hope to see a combo HD/blueray writer reader for under 100 in not TOO long.

yeah, i need blu ray to throw away my HDDs. lol. i'm stacked with HDD and that suck ass. as long as we have blu ray we'll be ok with a raptor as OS and about 500GB of storage (like 1 HDD)... and if u need to transfer stuff, another 500GB external USB/Firewire will do.
rite now i'm packed with 4 X 250, 2 X 160, 1 X 300, and every time i try to do something i have to keep moving around files to have enough space, it's rediculous. that doesn't even include my 120GB externals (2 of them)... but USB transfer suck ass as we all know it.
anyways. i think i'm gonna go grab a raptor or some seagate 500GB+ for my window drive... it's almost chrismas anyways, i hope they got some good drive onsale at that time.

The blu-rays is nice. But I don't really think I would trust it for a permament backup instead of a drive until I see how "great" the new coating is. HDD's last longer than DVD's/CD's in my house, so I would hate to have some crap on a disk and finally need it a little down the road to find corruption. But I feel that they won't be worth it until a couple generations pop out. I remember my first cd burner long ago, a Memorex 2x that never even burned 1 cd correctly. Switched with a HP about a year later and never had a problem since.
Considering all of the startup problems that blu-ray has had I would be very leary of this format becoming Betamax II, the sequel. Besides, I'm not real pleased with Sony these days.

Wow...I want what you got!!
I prolly have only 5-600 GB of stuff.. .but its all back up on a few hundred CD/DVD. I never use 99% of it, so I get it off my HDD as soon as possible. I am starting a new goal though. Getting television shows on HDD. Fer instance I have ever Stargate SG-1 show on one hdd (also have all house and heroes on same hdd... somethings going to have to to move soon (only 10 GB left) my goal is to do external SATA.. .and just hot swap the stuff when I need it :)
PATA is so 90's

the thing with DVD discs is that it gets annoying after u stack up about 100 of them. not only it's painfully slow to look for stuff, but when u finnally found it, it's super slow to view/check vs what's on the HDD... i'm probably gonna just built a dedicated system with a good graphic card, a fast CPU and find a way to stuff load and load of HDD in there. like a server lol.
those new mobos are carrying 6 SATA slots, plus some PATA... i'll just get 2 X PCI card with 4 SATA slot each... the main problem is keeping the system running cool :(
