View Full Version : if stuttering, would BIOS flash 5900XT to 5950U fix it?

Its a topic going back a couple years. I bought an MSI FX5900XT-VTD128. I am running Farcry at 1024x768-32, at HIGH texture and HIGH environment, no AA, no AF, MEDIUM else. It takes a fraction of a minute to work-harden but it keeps frame rates up where it is playable, maybe in twenties, thirty. I have a P4 2.6C oc'd by 20% to DDR480@2.5- 4-3-6-8 (or 2.5-3-4-6) w/ DCK EL OCZ 512MB RAM. There is no problem w/ the system as a whole until: I want to up res to 1280x1024. When I do the frame rate makes it lag to much to be enjoyable. I have 91.47 Foreceware and NVTweak, and it adds coolbits as I have it set as a "poweruser". Or maybe I already had OC clock bars? I can OC to 440/763 from 390/700. I do this and play still at 1024x768. But I get stuttering and even a stoppage. So I backed it off to 433/757 last night and played fine for 45mins. I assume its ok, I'll try again soon. Its fine.

I have read through here about trying RivaTuner, or flashing BIOS to the 5950Ultra. People are getting 500/800 and even >500 /950. I have the MSI, which is good(best) according to a review or two, FX5900XT Oc'er & in cooling, and I have lots of fans right at/by the already well cooled vid card. Going by these posts I can only assume I could expect to make a jump in overclocking if I knew how. So for starters: If I am getting stuttering at this low level of OC, could I expect to get rid of stuttering, and better yet, get 1280x1024 playable if I were to attempt other ways to OC?

Actually is it better to go to RivaTuner anyways, or is it req'd after a BIOS change. If there is a problem up'ing OC now, or stuttering, will it always be there w/ or w/o coolbits, or whatever "method" I have been using already? There is NVTune at nvidia.com; does that do anything to help, or is the sw BIOS adj. they talk about just for the mobo? Is RivaTuner old technology?

How do I determine if my RAM is 2.8, 2.5 or 2.2. That factor may be why some specs are /800, and some/950. I need to get to the bottom of that to get into the right ballpark I guess. I'm not at either now. [A] MSI FX5900XT-VTD18 review say Samsung 2.8. Took it out. Its Hynix marked F-28 (may be 2.2, or 2.5, checking numbers) The RAM starts at 700 and AutoDetect is 411/740, highest allowable yet 440/763. Can I flash to 5950U? Anybody know what Hynix HY5DU283222A batch 435U is? probly 2.5?

There are 2 things in the P4C800E-D mobo BIOS, AGP fre. (now locked at 66:33), and AGP (now 1.5V; & 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 options). Though not specifically a GPU Voltage, is it safe to go to 1.6V AGP to try a higher OC?

Thanks to the poster of "OC your 59XX...", and links I am better off at this moment....and I need to avoid what I'm doing and get RivaTuner, then maybe Powerstrip. The numbers may proove it.

Sometimes even a big overclock will not give you the option to play smoothly at a higher resoluton. If your ram is 2.8ns the theoretical limit is 700mhz ddr.I'm not sure what the ram is on a 5950U but I'm sure its more than 700.Actually those cards have 256mb's of ram and would therefore be incompatible with your card's bios anyway. You might be able to edit your card's bios with higher voltage and maybe getting a better overclock out of it.See if you can't find a way with this thread.Good luck.
