Yea if you're doing some intense 3d animations like movie editing and Cad3d then you need 512megs of ram. (or if you play games but they dont need more than 512).
Win 98se will not take more than 512megs of Ram without problems. Win Xp will take like 2 gigs or Ram, basically anything based on the nt kernel will take a least 2 gigs or ram. Win 2000 advanced server will take like 4 gigs!!
 
I recently bought a gig (256x4) of crucial pc 133 cas 2 ram. I do some graphics and stuff. for most things 512megs is more than enough ram.
 
Curently running one stick of 512mb and one of 256mb with WinXP I truly believe any more would be a waste of money.
