My fan headers on my mobo are dead, but I have an idea to fix that. I was thinking soldering a thin covered bus wire from the 12v line on the atx connecter and connect it to the fan headers I need. I don't know if should try it, I can't afford to kill my Mobo until I get a spare one lying around. But when I do get a new mobo I could try to mod it with +12 and -5 volt to get a good 17v fan header. Sound like a good idea or to risky?
I don't think I would try that. If you are going to run a 12v line to the header, why not just either splice it to the fan or run the power to a distrubution block. You can get one at Radio Shack for a couple of bucks that you can stick on with some double sticky tape somewhere inside. Then you gots loads of connections. Just use the yellow and black wires on a spare drive connector for 12 volts.:D

Uh, by the way, why are your fan headers dead? You been workin' on that thing?

When I was building my computer I got an Acorp mobo to save money. Acorp, need I say more. Just died one day while my system was running, I didn't notice until my system locked up.

I'd do the +12 line but not -5...that'd increase the voltage diff. beyond what the board is designed for and you might risk frying something, so I'd wait until you get a backup mobo.

I would only do that if this was my second board, just for fun. You would probably kill the fans with 17v.

I assume that the three-pin fan risers on the mainboard will be completely cut out of the mainboard before "re-juicing" them, electrically speaking? As satan posted, 17v would indeed murder a 12v fan. Not only that. The -5v rails of PS's only have 0.3 Amps available. There's no current to spare for anything other than the mainboard itself.
In a worst case scenario the fan would be toast, then the PS would be toast.
