How flat are the heat spreaders that come on the new Tualatin chips? Do they need to be lapped? Getting back into the swing of things.......

I was pleased with the IHS... seems to be very flat and decently machine smoothed...
Lapping wouldn't hurt, but you already know the IHS is really the problem, not how smooth it is.

I wouldn't lap the IHS cause if you ever have to RMA it will be clear you lapped it. You are screwed then cause the copper that is a few layers underneith the low thermally conductive nickel plating will show through. But on the other hand if you remove the IHS and crack, break, or burnout your chip you can do something about it. That is why my choice was to remove the IHS. If sdomething goes wrong you always have a back door open;) Noit going to say what it is anymore cause I got someone on my a** about it over at anandtech and they where going to like call intel or something;rolleyes: PM if you wnat to know. Don't lap the IHS you will only wreck your RMA chance and also probabaly make the IHS worse. It is very flat. All you got to do is run a straight edge along it to see it is.

Good point, I never rma'd anything to intel since their chips are so durable and I've yet to burn one...
I wouldn't lap it as if it were to be close to perfect and.. ... And it would require you to take the IHS off then put it back on.
And if you had to RMA it.. They would definitly know that you fiddled with it.

Ok, heres my little query, if the RMA chip had these spreader ever removed, what will Intel do with it if its already been RMAed???

Ah well if you send them a IHSless tualatin chip and expect them to give you a new one I doubt it will happen but you could try it and find out for sure.
