View Full Version : Overclocking Katmai PIII problem

Hello everyone,

I have an old pc that just barely makes the cut with the latest games. I have attempted to overclock the fsb, without success.
Here are my specs:

IBM Aptiva 2164-631
Windows98
PIII 500Mhz katmai slot1
IBM motherboard: v66...?
chipset: Intel 443bx (440bx/zx)
384Mb Sdram pc 133
Bios: Acer (2 years old; no update available)
Integrated soundcard
Geforce2MX 32mb DDR(overclocked 200Mhz core, 330Mhz mem)
145W power supply

The motherboard itself has no jumpers, so no mechanical possibility to change the fsb. The "castrated" BIOS has barely any options. My only hope was Softfsb, from that Japanese guy. I found my clock generator on the mobo and used it's ID accordingly. Softfsb was able to read the fsb, which is 100Mhz, but when I changed it, it would return to default after the 3rd pass.(I'm sure all you experienced overclockers know what I mean) Can anyone tell me what the problem could be and how to solve it? If you need extra information I'll provide it if I can. Thanks.

The fastest Intel was able to get the Katmai core running at was a bit over 600mhz, which is why the coppermine core was developed.

Yes, thanks for the response, but how can I overclock the fsb?

If IBM has disabled the bios features for voltages and front side bus, you probably out of luck.

There are programs (softfsb) that allow for bus speed changes from within windows, but without being able to change voltages you are probably out of luck (since you'd have to give the chip a lot more voltage to squeak even a few more mhz from it).

Is anyone going to help me?

Pinky is right..

That Katmai is not worth to overclock if you have to go through all that stuff.

If you have 500mhz you'll be only to reach 575..

Anything higher will most likely require you to disable L2 Cache which isn't really worth it...

If you can't adjust in teh bios I don't think you'll be able in SoftFSB since it supports older mobos.

I've got my P3 Katmai 550Mhz@660Mhz stable, 120MhzFSB, at 2.15v.core....

When overclocking we site examples of the average opposed to the top marks since fewer people reach them... your chip is one of the tops for that core. 600mhz is about the max for everyone else's.

Well that is very common.. Since it's 550.. better overclocker.. heh..

Though the 2.15 core.. I believe the Katmai only ranges from the 2.0-2.05 core.. ...

Not with a voltage boost it doesn't.... :D

Seriously, I had my 2.05 PII 450 running at 2.2 before I upgraded. It's certainly possible... I just wouldn't advise it with a Katmai... the 550@660 is a nice OC tho....

Well, awhile back I checked TomHardware..

And the Katmai only ranges from 2-2.05 v when I set it to 2.1 it just goes back to default.. well at least read on my MBM only 2v.
