I have a AMD Duron 850 @926 system, and I was recently trying different CPU bus's. Well, I know a speed won't work when Windows freezed when it starts to load. Anyway, I restarted the computer atleast a dozen times while windows was loading. That is what I am assuming caused the problem.

NOTHING IS WORKING!!! To clarify this, In the device manager tab in the system properties window, the ONLY thing listed is "computer". My floppy drive is showing up as a 5 1/2, windows obviously doesn't detect my cd-rom drives, and it's driving me up the walls!

What my original plan was to restore the system with a backup file I made. I had burned to a cd, and since I couldn't use those drives, I was going to copy the disk to the hard drive on my other computer and then set the jumpers to slave, put it in my problematic system, and restore it that way. But I can't find the disk!!! The one time in my life I need to restore my system, I can't find the darn disk!!!

Anyway, you guys have any ideas or suggestions???

Please help!

Kurt

Reset the bios to defaults: an overclock can really mess with software installs.

If that doesn't work then reinstall 98 over the existing installation: this will replace all the missing files and settings you need.

Keep the system at default through a few boots, as well.

Could try restoring a previous registry backup as well. Just go into SCANREG before booting up and then view most recent backups. Restore the one closest to before you screwed it all up.

Might cause some programs not to work but considering the shape you're in now, I don't think you'd mind much.

Happened to me too, and the only thing I could do was reformat and reinstall, as it didn't detect my CD drives, so I couldn't do anything wiht the Windows CD

rogerdugans has a good idea, if you can find on your drive the installation files of Windows, you could try reinstalling from there. If not, take the hard drive to your other comp, copy the windows installation files (all the cabs and that) to a directory on your hard drive, put it back in it's comp, and install from there.

it worked!!! I had no idea that there was a registry backup program in DOS, and it's sweet that it backs up your reg automaticly every day!!!

A world of thanks to you, I owe you alot.

:]

Registry is always the first thing to go when Windows takes a crap due to high FSB.

yeah, well I got a new problem now. When ever I try for a high FSB, even 852Mhz, Windows stops loading and says" windows protection error, please restart your computer." That has happend ever since I flased my bios. And I deleted my backup. Baybe I should flash with a later version.
