Im currently using a cele 667@900(1.85v) on an Asus CUV4x-C
with Volcano 6 cu+ and Arctic Silver II. 128 Ram PC-133.
idle at 37c, full load at 48c (ambient is 31c)

Now, the questions -

1) how come i can only boot up at 900Mhz after heating up the cellie using sandra? (I do a burn in session at 850 Mhz, then quickly reboot then change the settings to 900Mhz). BUt if i try to do a cold boot with 900, nothing happens?
I want to get to 950, any tips? or have i reached the limit?
i upped the voltage to 1.95 but i kept on getting random error messages, like - "himem.sys .........." then hangs.

2) i can get hold of a PIII 800 and swap it with my current cellie. Should i stay with the cellie or get the P3 800eb? (My question really is can i do better with that 800, taking into account that its already running at 133 FSB?) I might do some damage with my hard drive since it isnt a good quality drive. How high can i set my FSB without doing some major damage?

Thanks for any ideas you might want to share.

The first of your questions is tough. I suspect there's a very intricate, scientific explanation for it :). It's has to have something either to do with the thermal properties of the core or a electrical charge issue of some type... I could theorize but it would be a waste of time... I would suggest raising your voltage and see if the boot problem goes away.

The second question is one of much discussion. I'll save you the time and just say that the P3 will spank the celeron anyday. You might not get much more from bus overclocked, but the added L2 cache will more than make up for it, and you should still reach over 900mhz with the P3 (assuming that board has settings above 133 bus and the memory will run at those speeds)...

Hmmmm... on my Celery 600, I have it running at 1.95 with a Gorb, which is an inferior cooler, and it works fine. I'm gettin' an Alpha PEP66 w/ 72w Pelt to see if I can lower the Vcore... and if I got a few more Mhz I wouldn't complain... but I digress. This is an odd problem you're having. First, set your RAM to CAS3, but at this low of a speed, I would guess that's not the problem. It is a well known fact that burned in processors handle higher speeds better than ones that are not. I'd turn your FSB as LOW as it can go, raise Vcore as HIGH as possible, and keep ambient temps as cool as possible, run that Sandra burn in overnight coupled with something like Prime95 or Seti or something else processor intensive, and check it in the morning. Do it for about 2 weeks (sometimes longer). If this doesn't help, then I'd say you're stuck.

I, personally, would not get the 800EB if all you're looking at is OCing potential. That will only get you to about where you're at now, especially if you're using PC-133. However, the 800EB would be a better choice than any Celery if you're looking at all around potential, just because it was designed to be.

according to my own personal experience, if a chip is not stable at a certain speed, it is likely to give out all kinds of troubles, and not boot is one of them. I think your chip is not "totally" stable @ 900, so you are having such problem. Or you can simply disable L2 ECC checking see if that helps.
About you second question..uh...that is tough..if i were u, i will spend the moeny on some decent hardwares instead of on 800eb, for it is good for the performace in the long run. And with improved hardware, maybe u could oc higher than before..of course, that is only my opinion..:p

Thanks for the suggestions. I forgot to mention that my chip is less than a month old so i think that "burning in" thing WILL make a difference.

I have noticed that previously i wasnt able to get to 850 Mhz. Then several days later, and without changing the settings on my previous attempts at 850, I was able to boot and have it run stable at 850@1.85v. Still later and after slapping on my Volcano 6 cu+ and arctic silver II, I was able get it to 900. So i guess a "broken in" cpu will oc better.

My further attempts to get to 950 have been failures. I was only able to get it to boot, but when windows loads it just stops and gives out weird messages.

Ill try out your suggestions and ill keep you posted. Thanks again.

and about that P3-800, I can get it for free. Ill just swap my cele to my dad's. hehehehe. he wont need it anyway. he just uses the pc for word processing. I hope it oc's well and I plan to get it to at least 1ghz.
