Why do we use DVI? how many tons better than VGA?

DVI=digital video input(I think)

I've only seen it on LCD so far. Every pixel is render as it should. The picture is extremely sharp, color is vivid but doesn't bleed and at higher resolutions you won't get the blurring at the corners of your screen.

Unlike regular VGA it doesn't scale. If you're using 1024X768 res on a 1280X1024 max res monitor..it'll only render 1024X768 pixels, leaving you with a whole lotta black space. Same with games that only use lower res(which is a lot)

Pro: better pic quality by far. Night and day.
Con: bigger monitors can't use lower resolutions..realistically

My Viewsonic VG171 has a DVI input, its res is 1280x1024. Ill tell ya, games,and text never looked better, it crushes my Viewsonic PS790 and 225F or any crt for that matter.

hey Ritteri&Bubbles, do you play any games on your Viewsonic VG171? From the spec sheet for your monitor, I calculate that your monitor would max out on fps at 25 frames/sec. Is this what you experience?

Yes, I do play a ton of games, Starcraft,Wolfenstein(test demo),Half life,Max Payne, DiabloII, and a few others on a regular basis. Everything(cept Starcraft which is locked in at 800x600)runs at 1280x1024 at 60hz, I will tell you, this is the ultimate True 17" experience. Games never have looked better! Text rocks, etc. And the monitor is not limited to 25fps either. It will crank out whatever the card will in perfect sync. Many LCD monitors I know can be kinda lame for games, but not this bad boy. This digital LCD panel is IMO the best Monitor(CRT or LCD FLAT PANEL)under $1000 that I have ever tested or used. A good LCD that runs its native resolution and frequency will if made properly kill a CRT that can technically run a higher hz at the same or greater resolution, like my P225F which is Viewsonic's flagship CRT display.

yea DVI is faster too because your pixels and all that stuff dont have to go through the RAMDAC (ram digital to analog converter)in order for them to go to the monitor because the monitor accepts ditgital pictures unlike a normal VGA which accepts analog signals.

thanks. Maybe yours comes in an analog flavor as well and I got the specs mixed up -- who knows. I'll look into it more, cause it sounds like its something I'd like.

THe Viewsonic VG171 has both DVI and analog inputs, of course I use the DVI! It is an absolut drop dead gorgeous monitor. Once you go DVI flat panel, you never go back!

Yeah, I have heard about the fact that AA doesnt always look good(compared to CRT's) on LCD monitors, in which I will concur, but the Viewsonic has a gem in their VG171 monitor. Funny, they push their VG 175 monitor and tout that and have alot of reviews out on it. But the VG 171 is their best monitor in terms of text,grafx,colors, you name it. Even though it was just released about a month ago, I find it to be the best of the best of LCD's and CRT's for under $1000. THough just remember it is very basic, no "built in speakers" or fancy swivel platform(but it does swivel 150 degrees)but if you want a bare bones monitor(LCD)with no frills other than the DVI input, great contrast ratio,insane colors with a full 17" viewable display, this is the way to go. A smokin product. Just wait, the reviews will eventually pour in on this sleeper LCD monitor.:D
