Do you have a modem based on the C-Media CMI8330 chipset?
If so you might want to try a different driver.

I would say that's the problem. The CMEDIA chip for the modem and/or sound causes problems with the message service.
Updating the driver is usually the fix for it. Strange you're having a problem if both are disabled though.
If you're using the sound and not the modem you can still have that problem.

Thanks for the note, Jon. I was just about to post asking what this did. I'm usually okay until my girls come over and load up one of their fluffy internet game sites. After they're finished, I often end up with out of memory errors and notice the MSGSRV32 not responding.
My onboard modem is jumper-disabled but I do use the sound (VIA AC97). Think this problem is similar? And if so, would a separate sound card eliminate it? TIA
BTW, I have 3x256 DIMMs and a Norton-managed swap.
It could but the CMEDIA chip has a very specific problem.
The MSGSRV32 in Win98 is the worst thing I've ever seen in any OS...ever. Almost anything can make it puke and it's usually due to some driver conflict.
In your case I would see about a newer (or even older) AC'97 codec driver or even reinstalling the same one.

Done that b4 i even posted the problem im afraid.........im no exactly mr tech-head but i can build a wee sys etc so have passable knowledge but this one aint in my data base!!!
can i kill this MSGSRV32 or get a new file from elsewhere?
Saying that it isnt even there when i do Ctrl-Alt-Del right now but moose is flickering heavily not that its major jus very nippy and to add insult 2 injury i can see this getting sorted without something
major (like new board)happening as im para bout this c-media now:( ,,,,,,,,,,,Do you think this is a unfixable board flaw?? HELP!!!!!!:eh?:
What programs do you normally have running when dialing up? What is your ISP and do they require any special software to be installed?
I would close out ever possible program that you can then try to dial up and see if the problem persists.

going to maybe format an re-install everything again and kill all c-media stuff,
If the c-media sound/modem chip is faulty would it extend its problems throughout my system? TIA:burn:
It shouldn't and it doesn't necessarily have to be faulty to cause problems. There are known issues with the CMI8330 chip and Win98.
If you decide to reinstall keep a close eye on what you install and try dialing up after each program and driver you load up. Maybe you can find it that way.

Hey it got worse like every time i hit my diallup it was as good as hanging so i killed apps one by one and it turns out the real time monitor of my Norton AV 2001 was causing some of the prob as no flickering anymore just MSGSRV32 not responding Ctrl-Alt-Del kill it and on i go,,,,,,,,,,,,so now i need to try it all again with my AV killed,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,   think ill have some illegal
