I was wondering the best way to take off the standard hs/f.

What kind? On the CPU, or on a vid card?
Just like Flounder said we really can' t tell you anything until you say if its a cpu hs or vid card
also you should say what brand of hs or kind of vid card:D

sorry i was in a hurry this morning only had like 10 sec to type this. What i meant was the kind on the cpu. Last time i tried i pulled a little too hard with pliers and broke one of the socket clip things on the mb. Luckily the one i was replacing it with screws into the mb. I looked around but couldn't find any begginer guides on this or anything.

Most HSF's that use the clips require a flat-tipped screw driver to take them off. Pliers are bulky and there is a higher risk of breaking the clip things. Just push down on the spring/clip/whateveryouwannacallit! and put the end of the screwdriver behind it and pull it out as gently as you can. Most of the time you need to work it outta there.
Note: You can still break the clips this way so be careful. I did it to my slot-a to slot370 card a long time ago before I learned that you can't force things :P)

most require you to push down on the largest tab untill it becomes loose then ease the clip off.

BE CAREFULL NOT TO WIGGLE IT, my mate busted two cpus doing this in a week!!!!
One way I found to get my WBK38 off is instead of the conventional way push on the other clip (near the back of the case) really hard all the way down (hurt's your thumb) and it pops straight off with no wiggling,
fortunately boards are more robust than g-cards, I busted two cards gently taking it off and i've slipped and really hit the board with force and not a scratch!!!
Good Luck, and REMEMBER TAKE YOUR TIME!!!

Be careful with screwdriver too, don' let it slip. I got a nice Asus board you can have if you can repair the 3 traces I slipped and hit!:burn:
