what is a fastest hard drive I can get for under ~$90? but cheaper is better
was looking at the new maxtor ata133 for $85
or the IBM 60gxp for $77

it needs to be atleast 20gb

its going to be ran off a controller, either a ata133 or a ata100 depending upon what hd I get

Personally I don't think the ATA133 RAID controller will be worth the price difference.

You won't get any noticeable performance gain other than what benchmark numbers tell you. The drives are about the same cost but the controller is what's going to set you back.

I live by RAID on all my systems but won't upgrade past ATA100 until PCI66 becomes a standard...then you might see some serious bandwidth. Otherwise, ATA100 RAID is still only giving sustaining throughput for what ATA66 drives were measured for.

I think it mainly comes down to if you want to pocket some cash or be able to say "hey, I've got and ATA133 RAID setup!".

I just had an IBM 75GXP die on me and FUBAR my raid 0 array yesterday; I'm going to go the Maxtor route for the forseeable future myself. It will be a long time before I trust another IBM drive to hold data in my systems again. That drive was just over a year old. The only consolation that I have is that I have a fairly recent tape backup of my system. Hope this helps you out on your decision.

I heard one review of the 133 and that one wasnt all that great... Not sure I follow the question all the way... But Id say stay with the ata 100 for now...

ok I think I will just go with ATA100

but what hard drive should I get?
maxtor 20gb 7200?
IBM 20gb 60GXP 7200?

are there faster ones out that will give me better performance?

also would a $70 raid controller give you the same performance as a $30 one?
I would like to keep it cheap but want my bang for my buck:D
