I'm having serious problems with my sony cdu5211 rom drive under win2k.

It has a heck of a time reading burned cds. Kodac media. The drive tends to read the cd for a while, then when the drive spins down it won't read the disk again. Interestingly the same drive reads the cds fine under win98. (multiboot w98&win2k)

Anyone have a fix for this problem? Update drivers for win2k?

It's really odd. The cd will read perfectly for a few mins and then go into a trance inwhich it won't spin the drive up and can't see to read the drive.

Why would it work under one os and not the other?

All the disks i burnt under win98 6 months ago don't read in this drive while under win2k. But in 98, it's not a problem.

Any brainy ideas?

thanks.

i would say look for new or updated drivers for it, but other than that, its quite a stumper. Does it only do that wiht the kodak media or all CD-Rs?

Well, it does read a cdrw i burnt this morning. It's an exact copy of the kodac cd. Works 100%

I figure the lazer is fishy so i've returned the drive. Hopefully get a replacement for it this week.

The kicker was that it finally stopped reading under win98. So, i guess it was on it's way out.

How old do your discs usually last? If I'm not mistaken, Kodacs are fairly cheap. Even if they're not, age might play a part in your troubles. If you already haven't you might want to install Service Pack 2. It's supposed to fix many problems

Kodac cds are suppose to be really good. These cds are typically less than a year old. And even the ones I burned in the last couple of days don't work in this drive.

sp2 is installed. ;)

Anyway, hopefully after the RMA I'll have a working drive.
