Hey, i have road runner (time warner) usually is great with my ping and all but last 4 days at 8-12 my ping is in 160's and cant play any multiplayer game at all. so what do u guys think it is? i havent called them yet but i know its not my router cause its the same results straight from cable modem itself. but after 11:30/12 ping is normal again so i dont get it. ping is fine all day untill 8pm-11:30 pm im trying to see if verizon has fios in my area and get that but if they dont im stuck with roadrunner just really bad at this time. any idead :) lol
Try contacting your ISP, but most likely (this happened to me) they won't really care. In my case, adelphia told me that any ping under 300ms is considered okay and the engineers won't try to fix it.
8-10 PM is about the time most people are online, using up bandwidth. Perhaps they have had a bunch of people in your immediate area sign up recently and the usage on "your" lines has increased, resulting in your loss of bandwidth. That happened to me with COX cable a few years back. I was at the end of a dead end street, in an area with a bunch of dead ends, and with one of their deals, a ton of people signed up, and my ping went sky high during peak usage times.
Karbon, Cox actually ran a new underground for me with anything over 1% loss, and said that 150-200 was high and considered a problem, and Comcast installed a new drop for me as well with loss during rain(which indicated bad underground lines). If you run an open ping for at least 500 pings or so and can show any decent packet loss, they have to solve the problem, whether it be a new drop from the tap or something in their lines to the tap, which is where your house connects to the street lines.
During the summer at night I would get anywhere from 20-40% loss, Adelphia never did anything about it. Every time I contacted them and sent them pathpings and stuff, which clearly showed the loss over their network, they said they changed something and told me to power cycle the modem. (they never fixed it, the problem went away as the tourists left)
Hopefully your ISP can help you out and fix it for you
That is the point at which I demanded to have the problem escalated to a tech instead of helpdesk. Adelphia may not be as helpful in that regard, but most will actually get it done if you bi,.. well yell loud enough.

I have been having the same kind of problem. Contacted Adelphia and got nothing.. they checked.. sent ping.. received.. "its fine" is what I got. Something I've noticed is the amount of blocked traffic on my router logs. Has anyone else noticed this kind of thing on thiers? If so please post. I'd love to compair notes with you. I'm getting blocked UDP and TCP both. Its rather frustrating.

I wish I had your upload. I'm a hair over 240kbps.
Most likely due to the heaviest traffic time period. But my latency is rarely that high. I would test, but I'm at my 16Mb/14Mb (down/up) workplace.
Just tested, and my current latency on the Atlanta and DC servers was 18/19ms
