Hey guys, appreciate the help here.

I just ordered the Dell inspiron 17" e1700 with core 2 duo 2ghz. I left the memory at default OEM because I plan to upgrade to 2gig 667mhz ram. What I see on newegg and other places confuse the heck out of me. I see 1gig DDR2 667 ddr-5300 and ddr-5400. Is there a difference between those two? And what about timing? I see 5-5-5-15 and 5-5-5-12. Which is faster and better for my laptop? Thanks

DDR2-5300 & DDR2-5400 are basically the same thing. One is rounded up & the other rounded down from 5333 (333.3*2*8). The difference between the two timings is so small a benchmark won't even see the difference. IMO you should pick the cheaper of the two.

Sounds like a nice laptop you got & welcome to OCForums. :)

Dell may have a specific memory requirement, so check that out before you buy.
