Hi,

I decided to upgrade my computer in July. The full spec was
Gigabyte GA7IXE4
Athlon 1100-200
2X256Mb Crucial PC133
1X20Gb, 1X30Gb, 1X40Gb HDD
1XInternal 256Mb IDE ZIP drive
ATI Rage 128 Pro All-in-Wonder VGA
Adaptec 7850 SCSI Controller
Teac SCSI CD-R
Plextor SCSI CD-ROM

I upgraded my motherboard to Gigabyte GA7-DX with new 2X256Mb Crucial PC2100 EDO memories and a new Athlon 1400-266.
Since then I had many stability problems while both of the memories on. When I take out any of the memories from any of the bank it was working but quite slow. Sandra didn't show any problems or decrease in benchmark tests but it was damn slow.
I thought there is a problem in the motherboard and replaced with another one. Same prob continued. Gigabyte couldn't find any fault on either of the boards. Then I swapped the motherboard with an MSI K7T266 Pro2 same prob continued! Changed the memories to non EDO ones no solution! It is damn slow and cant see the second memory on any of the bank just one 256Mb. I thought all the possibilities, tried everything I could think but can't find a reason! Now I am thinking to change the CPU
Any suggestions????

I can only offer stupid suggestions, so here goes: :)

Did you enable DMA for your IDE drives?

Do you have Windows (I'm assuming that's your OS) managing a swap file? And is it variable or fixed size?

Hmm. I've run out already. Sorry, no help.

EDIT

Oh yeah. Do all the HDs have the same transfer speed? 66 or 100? And if not, which is your OS on, and is its transfer speed matched with its cable partner?

thanks for your help mate.

yes I did enabled DMA's.
Before it was loaded Win2K, I tried with that one first the tried ME, 98SE now using XPPro. All same...it is just unbeleivable!!!
I am seriously thinking to swap the CPU now but if there should be a problem with CPU it shouldnt affect the memory isnt it. Normaly if there is a problem with CPU it works or not :)
Anyway lets wait and see if there will be any more suggestions.
Thanks again :)

Edit:No c and E are ATA100 D is ATA66 but that wasn not a problem before the upgrade. All using ATA100 cables

I didn't think to ask before, but what temps are you getting on your CPU?

While SETI running CPU temp is 47-49C and system is 49C

I can't confirm mike's view that it's a high temp since I don't use AMDs, but high temps can drag a system down. You might stop in at the AMD CPUs section and see if those guys think that's a possibility.
