Im using eVGA's step-up program with my 7900GTX 512RAM and getting a 7950 GX2 1 GIG RAM. I'm in the process of water cooling my ring, but Im not sure I can water cool the 7950GX.

This is the link to the card from eVGA:

Can I Water Cool this card and if so, what VGA block would I need?

If you do, it isn't going to be cheap: http://www.dangerdenstore.com/product.php?productid=247&cat=48&page=1

If you would like something cheaper and that is the only card you are using on your system, take a look at Swiftech - they have a spacer for the card to fit 2 MCW60 blocks and should be cheaper than the DD option.

I would say, if you can afford it do the DD GX2 looks pretty solid. One inlet One outlet. as for the Swifttech one you just get the risers and hardware, you still need to purchase the heat sinks then get to vga block, but then you are faced with the jumping of the block in one then out one into the other then out of the loop. DD is straight and simple. That my opinion though.

And what are my options when I get my tax refound and upgrade to a SLI set-up with another 7950?

The Swiftech solution and similar will not work with SLI. The DD outfit will be really the only solution.

Man then its DD or nothing :( Man it may not be worth it upgrading. I know that I'll buy another card after taxes and go SLI for better performance in the long run. I know that I'll eventually will OC both cards, aswell as my CPU.

I really want to WC the rig so my fiance dosent throw my computer out the window due to the noice :)

Clever solution. I hadn't seen that. It won't work however for him as he wants to go SLI (actually quad SLI with two of these, if that is what he really wants to do). You would want to make sure you can get drivers for that though.

With the new 8800 cards due out in the middle of November (last thing I read), I definitely wouldn't buy this card right now as the price is bound to drop llike a rock shortly thereafter.

Well IM getting the upgrade from eVGAs step-up program. Im only paying $150 for the upgrade and turning in my 7900GTX.

Thank you all for the help, guess I'll have to buy the DD block to cool my rig.

if you're going to drop that kind of cash on the block, at least wait until the 8800 series is out and make sure it is compatible - if not, I'd wait until they have one for the 8800 (I think this card is your ultimate goal correct?)

Or you could get this: http://www.crazypc.com/products/9363GX2.html

and then 2 MAZE4 Low Profiles to save nearly 100 bux....MAZE4 rox

Are those compatible with SLI?

I also don't think that the blocks' mounting hardware will work. The maze4 has some looong mounting rods.

Watercooling two 7900s will be cheaper than watercooling one GX2 if you go with the Danger Den blocks.

Danger den provides low profile mounting hardware also.

This is my 1st system where I could spend some real cash, the ultimate goal was to finally have a pc that did not suck. So would 2 7900GTX SLI would be better then two 7950's? Once I go SLI after taxes I wount be buying much hardware for a while. I want this system to keep up for as long as it can before I have to upgrade again.

In most apps, yes.

Hmmm well my sys is totally for games and internet surfing(porn:p). Hmm wounder if I could use the xtra $160.00 into another 7900GTX instead of this 7950... it would be easier to water cool both when the time comes..
BTW if I have to move this thread from WaterCooling to VidCards let me know. I dont want to cross-thread contaminate the forums :)

Just get another 7900GTX you will be better off in many aspects: heat, power, ease of cooling, etc... GX2 is a joke IMO wait until they get multi core GPU's. The GX2 is just SLI.

Agreed. Or...maybe...the 7900GTO, 2 of em that is :)

Now if he has one 7900GTX why would he sell it and get two lesser cards when he can just add an 7900GTX for way cheaper? BTW try finding a GTO they are becomming scarse. 7900GTX > 7900GTO

Hmmm...must've miss read the thread then...didn't know he had a 7900GTX already. In that case, keep it and get another!

Yep I did. Well I'll call eVGA today and cancel the set-up for now. The 7950 looked good against the 7900GTX, but in the end, thanks to all your help, I see that it will be more of a pain to SLI later on and water cool the whole thing.

Thank you all for the great help and suggestions.

You do realize that a single 7950GX2 is already doing SLI, right? Two 7950GX2's would be quad-SLI. If you're only intrested in SLI (not the quad) then you might want to go ahead and step-up to a 7950GX2. As for water cooling, there is the $200 DangerDen block already mentioned. Also, Swiftech has a set of spacers that allows the use of two MCW60s on a 7950GX2. It's not compatible with quad-SLI, however. Myself, I'm waiting for the DX10 cards to come out before upgrading from my 6800GT.

Ok, looks like I have to move this to the Vid card section cause now Im questioning if the 7900GTX-SLI will be better then two 7950GX2's in the long, long run. I know that Quad > Dual SLI and that the 7950 is already running on a type of SLI. I want the best staying power over all. I will buy another card come tax-refound time and ultimately have two cards connected to each other(Dual, Quad, Hecta, what ever). The end product must be water cooled, quiet, and not suck two months down the road.

Immortal_Hero

Any of these cards could suck 2 months down the road if you are planning on DX10 games. If you are waiting until tax time to get you second card why not hold off an get a DX10 card around tax time?

K so ur saying to hold on to the 7900 and water cool it now. After I get my refund, buy a new DX10 Card then?

Me too. Not much point in buying current cards as they are going to suck in DX10 and with them comming out so soon...

That is why they made the 7900GTO so cheap, to get rid of the 7x cores.
