Well, I've tried getting rid of this hub and can't so may as well use it.
I have a 3Com Super Stack 2 PS Hub40 24-port hub (3C16406). $10 seemed like it'd be worth the risk of trying it out.
Anyway, I'd like to network all my systems (currently 5 with one of those being temporary, more to be added) and allow them all access to my DSL line. I tried a crossover cable between two computers and couldn't even get that to work, so I may be in over my head. :)
My questions:
1- To use this hub, is the only cabling I'll need (besides the CAT5, of course) a power cable? Does this thing just power up and do everything without administration?
2- Can someone point me toward a site that will explain what I need to do to Windows on all these machines to make it work correctly? I'm assuming there are some basics such as manual addressing, Internet Connection Sharing, and the likes that I need to understand. (Trying to not clutter the forum with more newbie questions and explanations... like these.)
3- Would one machine be required as a gateway/firewall/whatever (forgive my ignorance of the term)? And is it better to have a lower priority machine in this role as opposed to the main one?
Please forgive my total incompetence regarding these issues. I actually have glanced through the messages here, but always seem to come out almost glassy-eyed. :) (Okay, not that bad. But lost nonetheless.) Any help/links will be most appreciated.
