View Full Version : How I plan on getting Sony to buy me an Xbox360.

Due to the wonderful nature of capitalism, I'm planning on (Lord willing) standing in a long line to buy a console, this time the Ps3. Last year I stood in line and sat under a tarp in 30* weather while it was raining (and some light snow) for 16 hours having lost all feelings in my feet and some in my hands. Well, that taught me something, like, this time I'm waiting in line at Wal-Mart INSIDE for their MIDNIGHT launch. If all goes as planned, I'll be in line at Wal-Mart from about 6am-12am on November 16 to buy a Ps3.

Then I'll plop it on Ebay, and if someone meets my reserve (it'll be high, I assure you), I'll sell it, use the profit to pay for a 360 and then probably put any left overs on bills.

Last year I made $250 though I should have set a reserve and made more (bad timing on my part). So perhaps this will give someone else an idea.

Last year the extra money helped me buy a 7800gtx ($548 at the time!) and this year I suppose it'll buy me a 360 (again). Oh the ironey! :bday:

Plan B
If the people aren't willing to pay a premium price for the PS3, I'll keep it and hook it up to a 52" HDTV and rent some BD movies (King Kong, and waiting for Home Alone 1 & 2 :D )

If you don't have a pre order, you probably won't get one.

Several stores around me don't do pre-orders, they just do first-come, first-serve.

Great Idea! Not extremely original though. It was done a lot during the release of the 360, as you have already stated.

Of course not. People have been doing this for a long long time.

I love capitalism in action! XD supply and demand.. If your rich enough to buy one off ebay then it all works out!

sitting in rain and snow with no feeling in your feet and hands for 16 hours does NOT sound worthwhile for $250. You should look for a better job if it is.

he wont be making just 250 dollars

he will EASILY and i mean EASILY sell a ps3 for 2000-3000 bucks mininum.

these things are the IT ITEM of probably this era (2000-present)

people are already stating in other various game forums that the starting price of a ps3 will be around 1500ish and thats STARTING. the average will be like 2000

I guess you have a super nice job, because for the average joe, thats a good amount of money. Thats almost 16 dollars an hour for just growing some balls and sticking it out.

Wow D:
For 1400 bucks you can build a kickass computer and buy a 360.

I think if anything last year showed that having something pre-ordered doesn't guarantee you'll get it soonest. Particularly from gamestop/ebgames.

You stood... outside... for SIXTEEN HOURS... in thirty degree weather... and you only made $250 bucks? That's lower than minimum wage if you factor in that you were supposed to get time and a half after eight hours.

That's the worst f***ing investment I ever heard.

Listen to me... do this and you'll save your legs for when you're my age and you need them: Just BUY A 360. It'll be cheaper than a PS3 anyway. Then you won't NEED to buy a PS3 just to buy a 360, and at the very least you won't have had to stand in walmart, like an idiot, for 18 hours. Do you know how much of a profit you would have to make in order to justify that eighteen hours of work? I make about 45 bucks an hour, so it couldn't be done. I'd have to make an 810 dollar profit. I once modeled holding the same pose for 9 hours, even that was around 30 dollars an hour.

Don't be one of those lunatics I see on the news! At the very least by yourself a grill and some brauts while you're at wal-mart and turn it into a tailgate party.

There goes the tailgate party...

And this time he'll be waiting for EIGHTEEN hours instead of the already insane 16 he waited last time. If he sends me his address I'll send him a hat with the word "Genuis" printed across it.

Look.. 250 divided by 16 = 15.6! Thats about 10 dollars more than minimum wage in most states. I dont know what kind of prostitution service you big rollers are running, but for most college age kids, 250 dollars is a damn lot of money.

Dear sir,

The corner stone of any decent prostitution service is ADVERTISING. If handled correctly, your publicity works FOR you. Now this could be something as simple as having your "Ladies" appear on the Howard Stern Show.

And what third world, back of the woods, mining community do YOU live in? Everywhere I've been, minimum wage was 10 bucks.

Or even better:

We cure Cancer and several diseases and kill Sony.

1: Buy lots of PS3s.
2: Don't buy anything else, no games, no additional hardware.
3: Install Folding @ Home
4: Watch Sony crumble and cure the world of severe diseases.

ex5: We're all happy. :sn:

How this can happen? Simple, Sony looses money off of each PS3 sold, and makes the money off the games, accessories, subscriptions.ect.

That mining community would be the biggest state in the continental US...Texas. And our minimum wage is 5.50. Last time I checked you lived in Paris were the idea of work is painting in the middle of a courtyard or competing in fencing tournaments:) Lol.

Around here the minimum wage is $5.50.

I used to landscape for $7 when I was 15-16.

I used to work 40-50 hours per week while being a fulltime student at a private university, while only making $6.75 (and this was after working 2 1/2 years to get there! :P )

And when I was in highschool and was rather stupid and bought a new truck, I had a $560/month truck payment so I worked two jobs while being a senior in highschool. :)

Now I make a lil' more ($10/hour). If I make, say, $650, that's TWO WEEKS of work for me, made in one day. :bday: :bday:

Actually he's a male model ;). So he gets paid to stand there and look pretty. (There are other aspects, of course, such as making sure you stay sexy, business related items, handling your agent, etc)

unfortunately for us of the less sexy variety, we have other things we have ta do ;). In MI, our minimum wage just jumped up from $5.50 to $7.50, and our economy is already in a terrible slump. Jobs are evacing our state like frogs from a pot of boiling water.

But i'm lucky, I have a job already that pays pretty decently...

i agree, to me after child support is taken out $250 is more than i bring home in a week with out OT. so 16 hrs to make 40 hrs worth of pay isn't that bad of a deal. now you would never see me doing it but i don't think it's really that unreasonable of an idea for others

You're still not factoring in time-and-a-half that you get after working 8 hours. You could work, for example, at a twenty four hour dunkin' donuts and, let's say your state's minimum wage, such as MI's is about 7.50 (I'm still preeeety sure it's 10 in Chicago.) You'd be getting 7.50+3.75=10.25 for every hour after the eighth hour. PLUS (if we're talking about his sixteen hour run) he wouldn't have to stand outside like Bobby Drake, AND he would get a bonus of free donuts. But now we're talking about EIGHTEEN HOURS. In that amount of time, even if his own state has a low minimum wage, he could just drive to a state where minimum wage is higher and work any little roadside Wendy's off the turnpike during the holiday season, earn more money for less hours, and take home free food at the same time. (This kid doesn't have to worry about child support.)

And are we forgetting the ultimate goal of his strategy? HE'S GOING THROUGH ALL THIS CRAP TO GET SOMETHING TO GET SOMETHING ELSE!

you also forget many places, like where i work, OT only kicks in after 40 hrs worked. so i can work 2 20 hr days in a week take the rest of the week off and still only get paid for 40 hrs strait time. same with holidays, if i have a holiday during a week i have to work 8 hrs ot befor time and a half kicks in. i'm not saying it's all that smart of an idea but if he feels its worth it then it is plain and simple.

It would be more precise to say that "if he thinks it's worth it, then it's worth it TO HIM." That would be true. I think as more of an objective truth then it is NOT worth it. Especially since Walmart ain't feeding him in that line and he won't get a lunch brake. And how do you not go to the bathroom ONCE in 18 hours? That's the part I can't figure out...

Edit: But if he really wanted to get nutty, he could at least have some of his friends chip in and they could work shifts and maybe by the time the release begins get TWO or more of the systems and split the profit... That's from a more strategic point of view.

It's unlikely that you'll even see a PS3 unless you've preordered one. Sorry.

It's a moot point really, you just have to realize that sitting inside a Wal Mart for 8 hours really isn't that fun.

Umm... I believe that Ebay is going to restrict sales on the PS3 to avoid all of the hokey crap that happened with the sales of Xbox360 last year. The people selling just the Xbox360 box for a retarded amount of money and people not taking the 5 seconds to review the ad in entirety and see that it was just for a box.

Basically, from what I understand, it is going to be hard to sell a PS3 on ebay this year.

UnrealAlex

Even if you cant sell it at ebay, staple some flyers at the local best buys/wal-marts/eb-games and you'll have your phone ringing off the hook.

I should probably remind you they had a HELL of a lot more 360s last year than the 400,000 GLOBAL PS3s they're going to have this year. And those systems have pretty much already been bought.

Ebay is only restricting PS3 Sales to 1 at a time per account with 50 (might be 80 minium)positive feedback and Paypal only, from what I have read the restrictions on there now are for pre-orders only.

Either way I am doing this exact same thing but I expect to make at least $1200.00 profit. Which is more than most will be making at work for that day, well as far as anybody I know heh :) So it's worth it to me.

If you can pull that off I'll buy a hat and tip it to ya. But I think a lot of people (Sony in particular) are overestimating the demand of the PS3 versus how much money people actually have to spend this holiday season. (What with the recession, the ever increasing cost of gas, and the fact that Christmas shopping has been in steady decline for a highly coincidental 7 years).

Your best bet would be to start the bidding early and in the auction is just barely enough time for holiday delivery. (Dec. 15th just to be on the safe side, since all delivery organizations will be SWAMPED over the holidays... If nothing else with Christmas cards.) And if you do acheive your goal the least you could do is ship it with free next day delivery.

I hope I see that hat tipping, and I would offer free overnight insured shipping regardless of the price, I work for a shipping company :)

As far as the demand goes I assure you it's there it will be sold out in an hour tops, but the price? I am not sure what they will resell for but considering pre-orders are going for $1500+ now.. and that doesn't even guarantee you a system on first shipment, I don't see $1800 being out of the realm of possibility.

lol thats the worst idea ever, ebay restricting people with less than 80 positive feedback.. people who scam on ebay buy positive feedback.. that is so stupid, and I bet the honest people trying to make a profit this season won't be able to on ebay because they are not a power seller who rips people off..

Well, I do think it's rather dishonest to sell something that you don't even know you can come up with the merchandise. Last November a lot of people didn't get their "pre-orders" for months.
