Have been considering my first watercooler, and have been looking at some common objects with new eyes....

* dead 2.5 inch laptop drives anyone?
Nice ally case! bit on the large side though.

* UHF "Y" splitters
One we have hooked up here has a nice thick flat ally base, held with flush screws, cast alloy case of some description, but drill out the connectors and they look like they'll make functional nipples, and seal the base in with RTV. Look a bit small for CPUs, but for chipsets.....

* Retracting Tape measures...
Got one here with a cast aluminum case, too useful to sacrifice though, keeping an eye out for a cheapie with similar construction.

Anyone else got any whacky waterblock ideas???

Thanks, I think, IFMU :)

Found another in the junk box, a brass bell out of a doorbell or old phone, looks like it would solder down great to a copper base....

You sound like me here... A pack rat... keep everything to see if later on you can find a use for it...

lol

Right now Im actually building a waterblock, made out of plexi and alluminum sheet metal... But using what you already have to make something that someone else has come up with but with a lil twist to it..!~!

Oh I'm worse than a packrat, I see boxes of cool junk at garage and yard sales for a buck or two and I'm carting them off home to mess with :)

Actually I think nearly my whole cooling system is going to end up being built out of stuff I got like that. Got a couple of boxes of plumbing parts to pick through, coil of 1/4 inch tubing, couple of pumps, whole lot probably cost less than $5 and by the time I'm finished I think there'll be a lot of it left too :) Ah well, when my wife finally kicks me out, she'll probably get a deal on the scrap value LOL

She puts up with it rather well, probably because I pointed out that the last dollar box I got did about $150 worth of repairs to the house, if'n I'd bought every bit seperately. :)

Heh, jamjars, now if I had a pencil flame blowtorch I might go looking for an online "laboratory glassware 101" course to figure how to blow nipples on one. With the darn great flamethrower I've got they won't be so much nipples as 48inch DDs :D

i am not sure but you can probably drill through them, if you do it really slow, of fast, forgotten which but i have seen it done, i might try it if i had any jam jars left over from my home distilation experimant - just to see if it worked, it didn't

i will type this slowly cus i know you cant read fast

you seem to be missing the point, all of these are metals which are conductors, plastic is an instulator, unless you have some funky brushed aluminum one
