Ok Im looking at buying a new mobo soon, and the one Im looking at has 4 x 64bit PCI and 2x32bit PCI slots...

WTF is the difference with the 2 types???

This is new to me... they look like ISA slots, but obviouslly arent... any help here???

32 bit pci slots are the standard ones and they run 33mhz X 32bits wide. the 64bit pci slots come in two flavors 33mhz X 64bits wide witch gives you twice the bandwidth or 66mhz X 64bits wide witch gives you quadruple the bandwidth. the transfer rate of the standard pci bus is 133MB/sec so 33mhz 64 bit pci would have a transfer rate of 266MB/sec and 66mhz 64bit pci would have a transfer rate of 533MB/sec.

Ok, so do they make cards that support this? I dont remember seeing any that do. It could be that I just havent looked as of yet. Genericlly this would make it faster of sorts right? Im presuming not noticebly faster, but it would be able to read a faster bus speed. Am I right here?

And if I am, how does it work with a regular PCI card? Does it allow it to read it at a faster speed? Or does it take an appropriate card to take advantage to do that?

Thanks for the help!~!

They do make cards for them...but I only see these slots on higher end boards or server boards...i.e. duallies. I don't know off hand where you can get one though.

As far I've seen scsi raid cards support 64bit PCI.

There are 32bit 66mhz PCI slots too. But..I've only seen 3Dlabs Oxygen cards use it so far.

I have the Adaptec 29160 SCSI card that can run in 32 bit or 64 bit PCI slots. There are also some dual NICs at work in the Dell servers that are 64 bit.

With my 29160 there is a cut out in the interface on the card that fits over the edge of the slot so it just kind of hangs behind the 32bit slot. Just for reference a 32 bit card will work in a 64bit slot.

You will only find "server" hardware for the 64bit pci slots. Most of it is too expensive for regular users. Our servers at work has 64bit controller cards for their hd's.
