View Full Version : THE heatsink

Was flipping through a huge components catalog yesterday, and suddenly I found a huge heatsink.. So, I started thinkink.. Is it possible to put a huge heatsink on the processor and have no active cooling? The problem I found, was how to place it. I have attached a pic, it's 10cm wide, 30cm long and 8cm high. It's rated at 0,3 C/W at 300W. But it weighs about 2,5kg.. The problem is clearing the caps, so I have two ideas:

1. Having a big piece of aluminum or copper between the prcessor and the HS

or

2. Finding som sort of "socket expander" that would lift the processor up to the HS

But I see some problems.. Would the big piece between the HS and processor hinder heat transfer? And would the longer signal path with an "expander" give problems? (And is such a thing out there?)

Any views?

Well too big is never a problem - it will just become it just wouldn't cool nearly as well near the end plus being a 1.3tbird you never really want to go passive cooling - tbirds cook hot to begin with!!!

Too big would also hinder air flow through out the case...

I wouldn't recomend it.

it is not that good a heatsink really, a better idea would be to attach it to your ram aor graphics card where as couple could cover the hole thing,

if you still want to use it put it on the board and make where all the intruding capactiors are and drill hoes for them to fit

Er that thing would DWARF an entire graphics card let alone ram... it;s 30cm long, i.e 1 foot. You could probably chop it into chunks and cool everything in the system! :p
As for passive cooling an athlon probably won't work - the Al won't be able to spread the heat well enough.

hmm, i would try this on my old graphics card but i have stuck a fop 32 on it, that is quite big really, another idea for that heatsink only really applys to mad people

1. get 2 and put a peltier in between them, the hot side out of the case and the cold inside with a fan blowing on it - an air chiller

2. the same but in a large res- water chiller

If it was squarer then you could put it on a peltier and use that to cool it!!! Or if you cut holes for the capacitors use it as a hsf with a 120mm 125CFM fan!!!!

It would be much better if it was copper though because of its immense size!!!!

WOW!!! CPU crusher!

more then cruch it, you would loose your cpu in it

Knowing me i'd loose my motherboard in it!!!! HA HA HA LOL:D

I know there are problems, but I like playing with the idea.. And the width, 10 cm, is the smalles available. You can get this heatsink as large as 8cm*30cm*100cm! Then it weighs in at 24,5kg..

I've put a smaller version on my geforce, or two, actually. One on the GPU and one on the back of the GPU. Took my temps from 55C with a blueorb to about 40C. I've attached a pic...

<crazy ideas>
How about a brand new MB design? You cut the voard i two, one part with all the connectors on it (AGP, PCI, IDE, LPT and so on) and one board with all the different chips (CPU, north- and southbridge, regulators, powerconvertors and so on) Then you would have a new kind of case with a massive HS on one side. The MB with all the chips would then be attached to this heatsink so all the components requiring cooling would contact the HS and then the MB with all the connectors would "piggy back" to that. Then you could upgrade you MB i two different stages depending on what you needed, cooling would be better for all components, airflow would be less of an issues and computer would get smaller. (at least in height..) This would probably lead to world peace!.

Veland>> You won't be able to moove your computer than...
It would just weigh too much!!!! 24.5KG?????

My older PC wayed in @ 20KG!!! One thick case broke the f******shelf of my desk!

macs used to have mobos in to parts, this was a long time ago and no one took adaventage of it, this was before the imac and they were not that good then... or now

Mounted in a tower case it'd probabyl tear the mobo in half ;)
