View Full Version : How much time do you think you've wasted on games in your life?

350 hours for BF2, probably around 200 hours for WoW, Lots of hours for CS, then all the single player games I've played...
By the time Im 30 I'll probably have spent a year worth of hours on games, you guys? It's so hard to comprehend how much that time went wasted on games...I mean I definetly have over 1000 hours logged for games so far...probably over 2000 hours...thats a lot of time. I could have mastered the stock market and learned another language in that time...
Games are such a horrible hobby :(
lol, good 1200 hrs at Source myself, but I think browsing forums, hardware reviews and other stuff eats up more time than that.

Oh goodness.
UT2004 - 2250+ hours.
The rest - 200 hours.
Probably within a year and a half.
Last summer, I used to play 50 or 60 hours a week of UT2004, I got very good ;).

I'd say FAR less time than I've wasted on women. (And those are just the women I considered a waste of my time.)

I don't really watch much TV, so I guess it evens out with most people. :D
Thanks to the net I have learned/am learning,
-working on cars
-building computers
-welding and other metal fabrication stuff
-Koine Greek,
etc.
Games can be educational too (rarely). COD2 is a good example, though I realize it isn't the most realistic though the cutscenes are nice and historical. :)
Oh god, going back how far ? are we talking back to coleco vision and atari and all the way thru playstation 1? hehe 25% of my life and then I discovered pc gaming lol.

:D heh this is the whole thing. Now that I think about it, I started out with Doom>Duke Nukem 3d> Heroes of Might and Magic> other games...
probably a year definetly so far :O
Doesnt it depress you to think about it...
1/17 of my life went on gaming.

Eh.. hard to say. I doubt i've ever dumped more than a month of real time into any game. 6-12 days over the course of a year or so seems to be typical for a game I really like. I still feel like I waste an inordinate amount of time.

EDIT: I saw how long my post was, decided to shorten it a bit.
i just did some quick calculations of what i could THINK of ( individual games )
that count came to be just above 1 full year. But there are at least another 150+ games i played, plus other consoles i didn't add into the equation.
so i would bet money that my count is easily 2.5 year.....
and i don't concider it "wasted" time honestly.
Better than doing other stuff. ( well in my opinion ). I don't care about sports, i don't care about cars, or general exercize ( with 2.5 years of gaming, who would? )
Would someone who builds cars as a hoppy concider it "wasted" time? doubt it.
Would a kid in high-school who has played football since middle school, but never made it to the pro's concider it wasted time either? i highly doubt it.
In my opinion, Time isn't wasted as long as your having fun.

Probably half of my waking life. 6 hours of sleep 9 1/2 hours for work (including gettin ready and drive time to and from (live close to work)) and 7-8 hours a night if the woman doesnt come over. Even if she does I keep playin. Lucky enough that I found one that loves to watch me play. *On those nights I only get about 4 hours of sleep ;).
Prior to building this rig, 3-4 hours a night.
These estimates do not include weekends... double the amount of time played unless I've got other plans.

In a lifetime, hmm, not sure, I assume a lot, but I accumulated the most gaming hours playing WoW...most addicting crack game ever, never again. I still feel ashamed know how much time I wasted last year and part of this year on that damn game.
I posted this in another post, but I'll post again, it was so bad when I did get the courage to uninstall it (WoW) I had to nuke the cd's for 10 seconds in the microwave just to make sure I wouldn't play it again. The reason I nuked you ask? I actually tried to throw the game out once before, but I got it out of the trash and re-installed it. Like I said, it's crack.

Well.. thats from xfire stats.. and i dont always play with xfire running..so you could probly x4-6 thoese hours..
I had 90 days played in WoW at the 6 month mark. :( but I wouldn't consider any of it wasted because I enjoyed every minute of it.Now there were other things I could have done, such as bettering myself etc etc but instead I look at it from this point of view:Anything you do unwillingly is time wasted, yes even that 9-5 job you DON'T WANT to go to come Monday morning. I have never wasted 1 minute playing a game.

Far far far far too much in WoW, I'll freely admit that. After I hit 60 I realized that I was either done with the game, or I was getting into a raiding guild.
Oops, I got into a raiding guild. I don't even know what my /played was when I finally quit the game, but combined it was probably over 150 days. I quit this past summer, basically 20 or so months after retail launch, when I started playing.
Think about that. That's over five solid months of playing WoW 24 hours a day for the entire 5+ month duration. (spread over 18 months.)
But that's almost one third of the entire duration. It was a job, not a game.
If you're in that boat, JUST STOP. FOR REAL, STOP. You're missing family, friends, LIFE. I promise you, with absolute certainty - one day you WILL quit, and about a week later you'll look back and you won't BELIEVE what you did.
Do it now, not then!
I have wasted no time. Games are not a waste of time, friends. All the hours I've spent playing games is not a waste.

I'd say im up there with Fr3@k3r ing ame time if not exceeded. College was good to me for racking up the game time :)
And I'd agree with Oni, gaming isn't a waste of time :) I've enjoyed myself quiet a bit playing games as a releaf of stress and to get the noddle thinking sometimes.
I played Starcraft/Broodwar 10-15 hours per day for about 5 years. Don't know how many days that equals, but I think it's a lot.

eh, you're only wasting your time if you suck at them :p
so i'd have to say i've wasted 0 hours ;)
Yeah, personally, I almost find them therapuetic. It's just an escape from the real world, if even for just a few hours at a time. I'd hardly call it a waste either. However, I can't even begin to count up the hours for you...Got an NES when I was 5 or so, and I've been going ever since.
Wasted none, but used about 2-3 years worth of my time, and I loved it all :D

I wouldn't consider it time wasted. More like money well spent.
I've been gaming since '81. So many years in a combined amount of game time have I invested in the best entertainment to date...other than mountain biking, which is my favorite, also sky diving but way to expensive. IMHO.
Gaming......It's a hobby of mine so nomatter what hobbie time is not wasted...I have many fond memories that include gaming... good memories/good times=time not wasted.
If any thing is a waste it's going to a Club/Rave/Tittyclub spendin 100$'s in drinks, drugs, hoes and waking up in a daze with the past night a big blurr...thats time wasted..literialy. Speaking from yrs of Exp on this one.

Just the amount of time that I put into Morrowind, Oblivion and Diablo II boggles the mind. I lived on diablo II and Morrwind my entire 4 years at college. During highschool, every afternoon was in front of Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana or FF3/4.
Now that I'm getting more serious about making music and my system isn't the alpha beast it used to be, gaming has sort of wained off but if I get into a gaming groove over an afternoon or so, it will typically consume a good 3 or 4 weeks straight of those 3 hours that I'm home before the wife gets off work.

I don't know where to begin if I had to count back for my whole life. But since I installed xfire in March this year I'm at 250 total hours (it's always running so the count is accurate), which isn't bad compared to a friend of mine that has just been lost to WoW, 900 hours in 5 months (IIRC), or averaging 70 hours a week sometimes. I've made a few half hearted attempts to get through to him but....

I'd say about 500 hours ( 22 days /played) in wow, well over 1500-2000 hours loged in warcraft 3 custom games
maby 200 in css 100 dods 100 diablo, 300 in ut '99 and ut2k4 together, 2000-3000 in everquest1. I got to lvl 57 casual lvling soit was a huge timesink. eq2 sucked.
MY life life consists of school > homework> videogames > sleep > repeat There is just nothing else to do. I screwed up that whole socializeing thing back in middle schoool (in highschool now), so I have very few firends :(

Hundreds of hours in Call of Duty 1&2 for me, I thought 53 hours of WoW in my two week trial was pretty high. Fable and Oblivion for around 100 hours each, another 100 for Auto Assault, KOTOR 1&2, and Diablo 1&2. That doesn't even cover the stacks of single player FPSs from Doom 1 onwards.

In the last year, I have spent 106 hours on BF2, which is usually my most played game by far. :D
http://www.bf2stats.nl/player/61604615/
I don't know if anyone has played this game, it's called SubSpace, and I logged over 4500 hours from November 9th, 1998 until recently. I also put a good 600 hours in WoW, another 1500 hours in Americas Army and various amounts of time in other games, none of which held my interest very long.... Unless you count Yahoo Games ;)
I played CS for about 5 years atleast 5 hours a day during the week, weekends/days off school/summer was literally all day unless there was something else going on which was a rare occasion. Before that I played air warrior III quite a bit, pretty much the same thing but only for about 4-5 months or so.
Senior year of HS I gew up and quit with all the game bs and now I just sit and laugh at the clowns that are 20+ years old and games to them are like crack to a crack head. Im not tryin to raise he-- w/ you guys but im sorry theres a point where it gets ridiculous at a certian age. Playin a game here and there for some fun (or an hour or two a day for that matter) yea so what its fun & something to do. On the other hand I know a guy that is 22 he goes to work, comes home and plays cs, when hes off he plays cs, any free time he plays cs, then always says he "doesnt have time" when it comes down to things he really needs to do/get done...and whats there to show for it? Exactly as the title says "wasted time".

wow, you made me break out winders calculator for this. lets see... been gaming since I was 4, (my parents started me out on those annoying learning games early, then I discovered *gasp* theres games on this thing called the internet) thats 13 years, 4745 days (not including leap years) 3-4 hours a day minimum (3.5 for the sake of the calculator) thats 16,607 1/2 hours wasted. I could have actually done something with my life.
I played Starcraft/Broodwar 10-15 hours per day for about 5 years. Don't know how many days that equals, but I think it's a lot.
Yeah I know how that ball rolls. I'm not sure why but for some reason it was like... I wanted to replace reality with sc/bw.
I dont think games are a waste of time like Oni said above. When I was going through life, parties meant spending a ton o money on booze, throwing up and blacking out to wake up the next morning sick /w a hang over. That is what I would consider a waste of time.
I got at least 250 days on WoW alone. I would never call it a waste of time myself.
--pak
Well everyone must of played games somewhere in there childhood but now as you get older, you start to think.. why did i play games for?.. game are so boring and so on, so I'm saying we wasted half our life on games and another half to relise that

I strongly disagree.

id say iv spent like 1000 hours on games and like 10,000 hours on my computer. I suppose it evens out though cause i don't waste time on TV or Homework.
I haven't wasted any time. I play games when I have nothing else to do.
Therefore...
35 days WoW
Too much N64 to remember
Way too much Tribes 2
And other assorted games.
Yeah, but 0 time wasted.
I've been playing cs since 1.1 came out. Given that I've played pretty much every day for 4+ hours for 6 years, probably a lot of time.
Wiggles
11-26-06, 08:33 PM
I've been playing games (not counting my start with Minesweeper, Gorillas, etc..) since Wolfenstein 3d came out. I've probably played Diablo 2 the most though. Spent a ton of time after beating all the difficulties searching for more loot, and spending money gambling. CS has been the game I've played the most online.
Well lets see...
During all my WC3 history my 2 main accounts sum up a total of 11,000 games.
If you add custom games, and other account it probly goes up to... ummm... 12.500 games... if you put the equivalente of MAKING maps and watching replays lets say I've player 13,000 games of warcraft (still a short figure if you ask me).
So... 13,000 games asuming an average of 15 mins pero game... that means a nice round 3250 hours/135 days... OMG that's like NOTHING... my math has to be really wrong. Lets say it is 20 mins/game... 180 days... 6 monts... still doesn´t seems that much.
But if you add the following I can probably get a couple of years:
Starcraft
Diablo II
Utopia (www.swirve.com)
Mario Kart (SNES/64)
StarFox (64)
Mario (64)
Bomberman (64)
Smash Bros (64/GC)
Goldeneye (64)
Guilty Gear (PS2)

I have not wasted any time on games in my life.
Games have Served there purpose, be it entertainment, relaxation, social interaction. WAIT, I'll say I did waste about 30 minutes of my time on a game once, I believe it was called something like Mall tycoon, it was not fun, and I did not gain anything from it.

I've spent the last 18 years playing games, but the last two years have revolved around City of Heroes/Villians. I play pretty much every waking moment which is around 16-18 hours a day, everyday. So, I figure around 10 thousand hours just on that game. It's not a waste, I look at it as at least I'm socializing with people. Hell, I met my current girlfriend on CoH and we've been living together a year this month. My best friend who I play games with (mostly CoH) everyday lives several states away and I've never met him, but he's still the coolest/best friend I've ever made. It's better than veggin out in front of the old boob tube, although, I don't think my legs work anymore...usually slide straight from the bed to my computer desk...hmmm this requires testing.....*gets up and falls over*
Anyone know how I can overclock my legs?

Sadly, I've wasted the better part of eight years gaming online. All of my time went into online games. I was frequently out of a job due to closings and or jobs coming to an end. What did I do? waited until unemployment ran out to get a job. While I waited, I played 18 hours a day. I've shot down more enemy aircraft, circa WWII, than all the pilots during WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam put together.
You're not a true gaming geek until you're into flight sims. Combat flight sim players are the geeks of all geeks... That's not a good thing in my book. As handsome, charming, and witty as I am, it makes me wonder why I bother playing games. Well I guess I help make the small, scrawny, not so attractive geeks feel good about themselves because there I am next to them...
:\/ man I'm an idot!

Ehhhh, flight sims ftl. I'd say the only time I've wasted playing video games was half an hour with Nintendogs, the rest has been gravy.

Wow.. alot of time... When I was young I loved the twisted metal games.. and mario of course.. and digimon games.. and when I moved to PC I loved trek games.. and now im into BF2 and black and white 2 and so on.. I would have to have spent around 5000 hours if not more total.
Back when I was in a clan for Return To Castle Wolfenstein, I was gaming about 70-80 hours a week for 3 months straight. That's upwards of 700 hours in just 3 months. I was very dedicated to it and we became one of the best clans in the USA for RTCW, but after a while I just got burnt out on it.
I can't play any particular game now for more than maybe an hour in one sitting. Since the Wolfenstein fiasco I went through, The Single player of Half Life 2 has been the ONLY game to glue me to my chair for more than 5 hours in one sitting. I could NOT put that game down until I was finished. Of all the games I've ever played, I've never had such a fantastic, cinematic, exciting experience playing a game in my life. HL2 is a masterpiece.
Anyway, it's hard to say how much time total I've spent gaming. It's a lot. I've been gaming since I was 3 years old, and I've never stopped. I'd say I spend anywhere from 1-3 hours a day gaming (though it usually never goes over 2 hours, and it's spread out throughout the day), but I usually bounce between 2-3 games during that period. Sometimes I'll go like 2 weeks without gaming though. It's a spiratic thing.

I'd say FAR less time than I've wasted on women. (And those are just the women I considered a waste of my time.)
I LOL'd when I read that! So true... so true...
I've gotta say if you average my game playing time over the last 10 years or so from when I first started to really play games, I'd say a good 20 hours a week. Theres some weeks in there that I would play for like 80 hours (LAN parties :)) and some where I didnt play at all (out of town :()

I doubt I ever wasted a minute on gaming... I enjoyed the lot and was entertained...
We're in the 21st century.... computer games are as much a waste of time as babes and boobs, as expensaive as babes and boobs and not least and annoying as babes and boobs.
So... never wasted a damn minute...

 Right on, dude. I'd say that any hobby is time well spent no matter what it is. My father in-law always said I'd grow out of the video games and fast cars, but here I am 20 years later, still playin' the games and now I have a Mustang GT.
I guess there will always be some party poopers out there that don't understand peoples hobbies, and consider it a waste of time. My girlfriend is into crafts and interior decorating. I can't stand it sometimes, but she really enjoys it, so I'm down with that.
I would rather consider how much time I've wasted on work. Doing things that are fun makes my life enjoyable. This question could better be answered by my wife. lol
I can't even begin to calculate how many hours I've put into Counter-Strike let alone all the other games I've played. I can do a top 3 most played, though.
1. Counter-Strike
2. Starcraft
3. World of Warcraft

I have been gaming since Nintendo...I couldnt even begin to try and grasp how many hours I have spent gaming :bday:
Same with me.
But I only game when there's nothing better to do, so I don't consider it a waste. If I wasn't gaming I would probably just be watching TV which is just as unproductive, probably more. Besides, thanks to gaming, I've gone to lan parties and met some great friends which I wouldn't've done otherwise.

i think there's a point of confusion here i'd like to address, which plays to the title of this thread, and it's this: since we're born there's a sense of "what you should be doing" drilled into us by OTHERS, parents, teachers, everybody; but folks, this is the key: this is what THEY want you to do, not necessarily what YOU want to do; now if YOU really want to go out and climb a mountain, get a career, feed the needy, then by all means DO THAT, but do it because it's what you want to do, not because someone else wants you to do it; i think that's something we all need to come to grips with; often our idea of what we "should" do is not a personal sense of desire, but rather what someone else has told you you're supposed to do
anyway, i'm not saying that playing video games is bad or good, but i think we need to make quality judgments ourselves rather than having someone else's judgments put on us

i tell ya there can be a lot of imagination and inspiration in games; it's an ART; half life 2 for me just screams beautiful design, inspiring, just as any great sci-fi book, minus the lack of story :) of course you ARE the story, albeit a story of shooting stuff
