ok first off i gotta tell u he told me last night before i went to bed...so i hope i remember everything..heres everything in chron order

runs windows ME
he has a savage III graphics card (yeah...thats all i know bout his sys thus far  )

1) hes playing diablo 2 and the video is lagging horribly (not as per usual)

2) (didn't say if it was in the game or no..) he got a blue screen and had to restart

3) wouldn't boot, even into safe mode

4) he did recovery program that came with his comp (bring back to factory specs)

5) booted up fine

6) everything works except when he uses his "top cd" bay it crashes windows

7) as to 6....he hadn't tested video in diablo II again...so it may or may not work yet

8) did repair installation again (tho i dun know why...im thinkin if it didn't catch the problems the first time it probaby wouldn't the second...but yeah)

ok...so im sorta baffled...might have been just be a video card....but the cdrom?! i don't see how these might possibly correlate....any help would be much appreciated by both him and me :)

I doubt it is the Video card. Is the top bay crashing only when he puts in Diablo 2...second must important thing...is it a DVD-ROM. I know some DVD-ROM drives and Diablo 2 don't mix to well. Hope this helps.

ok LOL....another guy sent me an email with his problems

im by NO MEANS even close to a comp wiz....but people seem to think i am....

this is a memory prob
(edit, if mods want to cut and paste this to that section its fine with me )

ok....this guy was running 128 mb ram (he doesn't know what brand/pc???/cas)

and he just recently bought some kingston (128x2) which he also is not sure what "" as above

thats always sort of annoying...since without knowing exactly what hes using you can't do much more than guess....

anyway....he said after instaling the new 128X2 his computer was noticeably more laggy

first thought would be to go into the bios settings and check the timings....but i won't tell him to do that and mess with settings if he doesn't know what the specs on the ram are....

would there be any other explanations other than ram timings?

if he added 100's to 133's would this hinder performance, for example? or does mixing brands sometimes make significant performance drops?

I doubt that 100's would even do 133's. He would get three beeps when booting up I do believe. His timings can make it more stable...tell him to put his timings to CAS 3. If that doesn't work tell him to take out the RAM and see how the system works.

its probably a safe guess that he got cas3 anyway

cas2 or cas3: ones a bigger number

cas2 or cas3: ones less expensive :D

CAS 2 is more expensive and is faster. CAS 3 is cheap and not as good of a perfomer.

Had some cheap generic PC100 CAS3 and PC133 that would do 146. Although when I upgraded to all 133 at the same speed it out performed the PC100/PC133 by about 10-15%. Guess I was just lucky with the RAM, wouldn't recommend it though.
