hiya,

i was wondering whether anyone could reccommend me a cooler for an athlonXp1800. i dont plan to overclock it, but since i read an article on how XPs tend to go up in smoke if the heatsink falls off (instead of shutting down like the P4 - http://www4.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q3/010917/index.html), i'd like one which does the job and is not heavy.
(therefore if you've heard of any coolers falling off, i'd like to know too!)
cut off price is $40, i am in the UK but most probably i'll buy it in austria since a friend of mine can get a discount :D
of course the more silent the better, but that goes with a price...

i'd appreciate any help coz when i look at all the possibilities i just get lost and dont know whats good (enough) for me, the only thing i know for sure is that i wouldnt like to spend more than those 40 bucks (which is like 26 british pounds to my knowledge and around 500 Ats)

in case you want to know, the mobo is an EPoX EP-8KTA3PRO.

thanks for any advice!!!!
pete

For Now.....Wlecome to the forums

For Later....Post in the correct room, it WILL get a response...

And there is a list of recommended HS for all chips in the cooling room, look for a sticky at the top of the page. But if your not overclocking then you dont want a loud fan, so id go for the Galciator 2, as it is a superior cooler and quiet as all get out.

Hi Pete.

My XP is cooled by an Alpha PAL8045 with a YS-Tech fan on top. It's a lovely chunk of copper bottomed alloy goodness (and 80mm square)

I suggest you go here (http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/) for a reliable review of acceptable HSFs. For the price/performance aspect an SK6 should be great just make sure you get a quiet fan for it.

I am using a Swiftech MC462-A with a Sanyo Delkhi fan on mine. Works good and not too loud, however I might try the 68cfm 80mm Delta if I can stand the noise.

The Millenium Glaciator is a good cooler good performance and not to loud. There are better choices though if you intend to overclock.

You would have been better off with a number of copper HSFs. With all the HSF reviews available nowadays, Aluminum based HSFs are certainly second class citizens in the cooling world. Do let us know how you fare with that HSF, when it arrives.

MCX462 here....the 68CFM is a nice fan, but the 80CFM is REALLY loud, about like Delta's 60mm 50CFM 8000rpm one. As you can see in my sig the MCX462 is awesome. It cools the chip and the TEC well. A lot of people say it's the best HSF you can get but way too expensive. I paid about $50 I think it was from sidewinder computers, without the fan. It works awesome and better than all other HSFs I've used yet but it cost a lot.
