View Full Version : Project: Compulsive
I've always wanted a small, but still powerful computer to play around with, for use as a LAN server for CS Source and other games. But at the same time, still be a functional gaming computer for when its not being used as a server.
Now, as the leader of the WFB High School tech club, we need a solid server to run games off of at our LAN Parties, which finally gives me an excuse to have some fun with a slick little SFF Build in the only SFF case that I have ever taken a true interest in for a build.
I present you with Project: Compulsive

Compulsive is the perfect name. haha
Its an addiction, I know, and there is no cure for it yet
The cure is you not getting anymore money! But thats not going to happen. I'm sure it'll be a badass rig like always. Oh and what did you do with that big UFO?
its chillin down in my basement for now... might sell it, might keep it... I really don't know yet

Figured you would use your pressler for something.
Looks like and interesting project, any pictures of the case?
Also be careful SFFs are fairly addicting to work on becuase you have to be so much better at planning them out than you do with the big cases.
case will be here Thursday - I don't want to clutter the thread with pics that aren't mine, so you're gonna have to wait another 2 days ;)
and yeah - I'm already trying to plan exactly how tall of a HSF I can stick in there, and what good heatsinks are available for the room that I have to work with
Interesting idea...any mods planned, at least for portability?
Also, the rig looks pretty good, but I'm also interested in your networking. Are you going to run gigabit? If so I'd make sure you have a switch/NIC that supports it, as it'll probably be noticibly faster.
AIM me if you ened more ideas.
7
soon we're going to be wiring our house with all CAT6 cables, along with a new gigabit switch... but at the LAN's we have two 24-port 10/100 switches (they were free and work damn well), plus all the kids there usually have CAT5 or CAT5-E cables... so its no use to try and get the entire LAN party running on gigabit
got the case in today (I put extra silver LL thumbscrews on it for now until I get black ones - the screws that it shipped with were made of aluminum and started stripping out when I only took the side panels off of the case *shrug*
so far the case is nice as hell, and it definitely looks like a fun case to work with... can't wait until I get started on mods and building

you gonna change those silver thumbscrews to black ones? as i think it looks a little tacky for a case like that
but either way ima be watching this like always
yeah, the I'm ordering some black M3 threaded Lian Li thumbscrews along with vented PCI cover plates like I used on Omerta... for now I had 12 LL thumbscrews lying around, so I just threw thoes on the case for the time being...
anyways, I threw some rubber edge trim around the wiring holes in the drive bays to clean up the inside a little bit:
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/comp_05.jpg
Looking good. Lian-li has cleaned their game up since I bought my PC-70.
So no gigabit? Interesting. Are you going to roll a NIC on this thing? KillerNIC perhaps?
7
I want to know where you get the money for all of these projects?
sleeved the front panel connectors:

I want to know where you get the money for all of these projects?working... saving up paychecks, selling old parts, fixing/building computers as a side job... it adds up

you must have alot of time and sleeving on your hands, as thats all i see you doing in these projects. id bet youd re-sleeve a PSU if it wasnt covering all the wire (ie an inch of wire is showing) :p
I have about 100ft of each size of sleeving from 1/16" to 3/8" and maybe 50ft of 1/2" as well
then I have 25ft spools of 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" heatshrink
I'm not THAT anal about sleeving, but I do see it as a very important factor in keeping the case looking clean... but not to the point of re-sleeving a PSU because 1" of the wire was showing LOL
Oh, come on. You can't sleeve the front USB connections without vinyl dying the gross beige housing black. It's just not possible.
By the way, what is that mousepad? Is it carbon fiber? And it's friggin huge!
7
1. I don't have access to vinyl dye, and the case doesn't even have windows, nor can you see beige from the front at all... if I had vinyl dye, I'd probably have done it though
2. mousepad is a Func F30.R textured 17" mousepad - the surface looks like CF a little bit, but its just random black and gray dots across the surface for the optical mouse to read (even though it doesn't really need them)
I absolutely love Lian-Li, I've got a few of them and they amaze me every time I see 'em. Oh and you sir are good at what you do. I'll be sad and happy at the same time when it's over. Happy because you will probably be starting another project.
You've got some great ideas on this case, it'll be interesting to see how this one turns out.
By the way, grab some of the seeds for that money tree and mail them to me please.
7
started drawing out my first mods on the case:
modding the HDD cage backplate for a 60mm fan that will be on the outside of the case
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/mod_02.jpg
and cutting out all the 40mm fan grill work on the back of the motherboard tray, as well as adding a third 40mm fan on that peice (all the X's mean that part is getting cut out)
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/mod_01.jpg
For pimp factor, I would use the curvature given by some of the vents that Lian-Li gives you, instead of cutting it into a right angle use the remaining part of that vent.
It just looks more professional, that's all.
If you have any qualms about cutting up a Lian-Li with a dremel talk to me, I did it on my PC-70, pretty much the same mod.
By the way, don't touch the metal after you've been dremeling it with a tough cutoff wheel at speeds of up to 30k RPMs. Burned the crap out of my finger.

for most modding, especially with aluminum cases, I prefer to use a jigsaw/scoll saw with a fine-tooth bi-metal blade in it... and yeah, I've burnt myself when polishing aluminum with my dremel at the full 35k RPM and a polishing wheel... DAMN it was shiny, but it was burning hot too!
and now I get what you're saying about the rounded corners - good idea!
got the first mod done:
cut it out with a scroll saw:
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/mod_03.jpg
cut a small tab to allow wires to be routed into the case and put some rubber edge trim around the hole:
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/mod_04.jpg
just threw a cheapie 60x15mm fan on there from an old PIII machine for mock-up until I get a new panaflow to take its place:
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/mod_05.jpg
and installed:
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/mod_06.jpg
Looking good, just make sure that thing isn't rattling around. To me, I'd rather have seen you put some thinner stripping around the edge of the fan, but that's just my opinion.
7
today I grabbed some smaller edge trim for around the 60mm HDD fan hole that I cut to turn down the ghetto-looking-factor ;)

you sure your gonna be able to fit that huge of a heatsink in there?
yup - it should have just enough clearance to be mounted while the mobo tray is inside the case, and the 120mm PSU fan will suck air through it and out the back... or atleast thats my plan right now

Four handles?? Are you filling it with concrete!? Nice choice on the case, I'd like to see someone watercool that little box.
got the 40mm fan grills cut out and added the third 40mm in the center :)

I must say, the case looks fantastic with the handles. I think I'm more excited about this than you are. Keep up the good work!

OK... we're back on track now that I have cash again (spent what I had left to go paintballing for the first time in almost a year last week... I didn't know what I had been missing!)
just ordered the following from Performance-PCs and FrozenCPU:
3x 40 mm Fan Grill - Chrome
10x Connectx™ Female 3-Pin Fan Housing Black
1x Panaflo L1 Ultra Quiet 60mm Fan Sleeved
3x Sunon 40x20mm MagLev Fan (KDE1204PKV3) (little bastages cost over $10 a peice... never thought I'd do that for 40mm fans, but its the price I was going to have to pay for good, quiet 40mm fans)
1x SunBeam Multi Fan Power Port
2x Arctic Cooling AF8025 80mm Case Fan
Looking great Sneaky! That's going to be a dang fine server if I say so myself. :D
Keep it up, looking forward to see the finish.

and Omerta is basically done... jack worth of mods because I don't want to butcher a $300 Lian Li case... plus the rest of it is just hardware upgrades (not too visually stimulating *shrug*)
Very nice. Get some mesh in between those 40mms on the back, and it'll look great.

alright - this is the third time I've changed specs of the box - but these specs are staying, and I might even end up throwing a Xeon 3040 (e6300 equiv.) in there eventually as well
video card on the list is a 7600GT (80nm), but I might grab an x850XT-PE from an old friend because all its going to run is CS: Source
for now, I'm just re-using my current parts into that rig and then upgrading the main one (Omerta)
on another note... finally picked up a PSU for it... a ton of overkill, but its small, black, fully sleeved, and paid only $100 shipped for it - yes, a PC P&C 510-SLI is going in my SFF rig :) (you can never have too much power though ;))
Love that PSU Sneaky, have one myself!
Lookin' good. One question though, why the Xeon 3040 instead of the E6300? If you can get the X850XT-PE for cheap then hop all over that because I know that card will run CS:Source just fine.
all the 775 xeons are like the 939 opterons - binned to run at lower voltages, and usually are better low voltage clockers because of that (and its a server, so why not *shrug*)

What compelled you to go with AC fans?
Looking awesome! I love the black border around the fan holes... it gives it a very smooth look. Very cool indeed!

Hm, I wish I would've known that before my dad ordered an E6600. I wouldve gotten the Xeon since it would run cooler.
What compelled you to go with AC fans?
well... I was looking for cheap fans with good airflow while still still being quiet - so the AC fans fit that description... they also didn't just have sleeve bearings like yates, but Liquid Dynamic Bearing like the new Scythe S-Flex fans... and AC puts a 6 year warranty on them (find another fan with a 6 year warranty LOL)
last but not least... the wires come pre-sleeved with black 3-pin connectors :)
kickass fans, and I love them :attn:

Hey guys... first post here. Stoneyman is a long-time pal and fellow modder.
I just picked up one of these cases from NewEgg and I am looking forward to building the system.
The first thing I want to say is I like the triple 40mm fan mod. I am seriously considering that now as a viable option.
The one thing I want to note about using SLI with this case, is you will need to either a) cut the case or b) cut the PCB of the video cards. I will post some pics to show what I'm talking about later this week.
I would be intersted in comparing dBA score and temperature readings on my system and yours when it is finished. Right now I need to get started on the cable sleeving and such.

not so much with SLI in general, but with any full-length card (longer than a reference 7600GT) will require modding/cutting of the 3.5" bay under the 2 5.25" bays up front... I was considering doing it, but instead I'm just gonna get a 7600GT or x850XT-PE - I really don't need much video power for a SFF server/portable game rig, though it is tempting to put my x1900XTX in there and up the main rig to a x1950XTX or wait until ATI's next gen offering

I don't like cutting on Lian Li cases anymore than the average guy. For me, the issue is SLI because you need to find a short length card that is good enough to run in a main rig configuration. I don't know of a way to find a good list of non-full-length SLI cards, so it seems to me the better option is to cut a corner off the end of the PCB. I'm at work now and I can't snap a pic of it. I'll try to get it tonight so I can show you what I mean.
** EDIT ** It looks like I was dead-wrong about the video cards after attempting to put them in the case this morning. I will have to cut the case and since it diverges from this discussion, I thought I would just go ahead and make my debut with a project log instead of cluttering up Sneaky's thread.
Here is my thread: SLI in SFF (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?p=4815136)

Save your money Sneaky :) Keep the XTX in your Omerta rig and just pick up a low end card for your SFF. Id suggest a X1300XT as well! I got one, and it runs CSS @ 1024 * 768 w/ 100+FPS all the time.
Lookin good though
when you gettin the C2D 6600 ?

for the this rig, I'm getting a 80nm XFX 7600gt w/ 1.1ns ram (damn good clocker :))
and instead of the e6600 - again, I'm going with a Xeon 3060 (e6600 equiv.) and see how that does :) (friend got one to 3.4 w/ 1.4v... nice LV clocker indeed)
got bored and printed out a 1:1 picture of the mobo I plan to get (Asus P5B-VM G965)... and figured out how the XP-120 would sit in the case

http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/mockup_2.jpg
took a picture through the PSU opening - the 80mm side fan is basically right against the side of the XP-120 - hopefull it'll be able to fit in there alright on the actual board (you can see the fan clip resting just a mm or so within the fan housing - the actual board will be raised up about 1/4" from the standoffs and the clip should clear the fan then)

good luck hope your stuff fits in there with ease
this project as well as Omerta are probably going to end up going on hold for a while - I just made the home team at my local paintball field and am getting back into tournament paintball which I'm going to funnel a lot of my cash to right now.
Both projects will definitely be finished (I refuse to sell either case or give up on them), though slowly but surely
Keep your eyes peeled for updates, but don't get angry if not much happens over the course of the next 1-2 months
oh... and I asked my manager if I could take some extra hours in another department, so I'll see if he can work that out and make some good money to try and afford both paintball and my computer projects at the same time :bday: (and x-mas + birthday is coming up soon, so I might get some goods for my projects ;))

Most mobo mfg sites have scanned pics on there to view. Newegg does to.
I googled for the motherboard model (P5B-VM) and found a decent high-res pic that I cropped and printed
OK - so work has resumed on this project - the PSU (PC P&C 510-SLI) finally came today, so I got started on wire management:
first off, I rarely use the front panel connectors for USB/firewire/audio, so I pulled out the entire unit and replaced it with an aluminum plate that I cut out of an extra Lian Li 5.25" bay cover:
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/fpmod_01.jpg
then I installed the sunbeam 6-port fan bus, and then started setting up all the fan wires that will go to it:
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/sbfb_01.jpg
PSU got installed, and then I cut out a section of the bays to allow the PSU wires to pass through and be hidden:

and the back of the case with the PSU installed and vented PCI plates:
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/psu_01.jpg
ok - concentrating on this project now as a fun rig to screw around with before I rebuild my main rig come spring
got an x800GTO˛ off the classies, so now I have a video card for it (clocks hella nice on the memory)
then I need a mobo (P5LD2-VM DH), RAM (2x1gb kit of some DDR2-667 or 800), and a CPU (E4300)... then I'm going to use my 2x250gb hitachis in RAID 0 for HDD's in this rig
asusradeon

that looks amazing.... keep us posted
card is in - its an x800GTO² that will do 570/640 with upgraded cooling, for now its on stock, but I have a x850XT stock heatsink coming for it :)
http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/compulsive/card_01.jpg
now I still need an E4300, P5L2D-VM DH, and 2x1gb DDR2-667 before its actually up and running (going to be using my 2x250gb Hitachi T7K250 SATA II drives in RAID 0 for it)

edit: if this board is what its made out to be... I might change plans for the processor to an Xeon 3060, then use my x1900xtx for the video card... so tempting!

Yeah the new Abit board is a beast. Been trying to get my hands on one for my mATX setup, but they are hard as hell to come by. The 3 places I looked are sold out as soon as they come in.
Probly be 3-4 weeks before I can get one... shipping to APO(Iraq) kinda sucks haha. BTW, hell of a setup, keep up the good work.
~cheers
Yes, I'm digging up a freakin' ancient thread, but I kept the case in the basement until I managed to find a use for it because every time I saw it I couldn't bring myself to sell the damn thing.
I modded the drive cage assembly to accept full-size graphics cards, and built my little brother a fkn AWESOME micro-atx build in this modded case about a week ago:

Very nice work, especially getting that 4870 in there :D Is it noisy with the 3 tiny fans at the back?

case is dead silent - that's one of the reasons why I paid $15 a piece for little 40x20mm fans that are legitimately quiet
80mm Case Fans: 2x Arctic Cooling AF8025 80x25mm (26cfm @ 24dba)
60mm Case Fans: 1x Panaflo L1 Ultra Quiet 60mm FBA06T12L (12cfm @ 24dba)
40mm Case Fans: 3x Sunon 40x20mm MagLev Fan (KDE1204PKV3) (6cfm @ 18dba)
here's the messy side... it's not too bad though
