thinking about buyin one..local guy is selling for $60, but theres no HD (i have a spare), and he doesnt know the boot up password, so my question is - can i reset that password? and if so, how?

It can be reset, but it is pretty difficult. From what I remember it involves removing a chip form the MB and either jumpering it yourslef or having it sent out to have the password removed. Just pulling the CMOS battery won't do it.

I'm not entirely sure that is true. I think I've actually done just that to remove a bios password on an older thinkpad...

My dad works for IBM and has a T40

prior knowledge tells me that after three incorrect password guesses at boot up you have to send it back to IBM for them to reset the pw, so im guessing you'd need to send it to IBM to get the pw reset. dont take my word for it though (the three strikes pw guessing is true though).

D94, which password is set? If I'm not mistaken, there are 3 passwords, BIOS(won't let you into BIOS) HDD, and POST.

The reason he's probably selling it so cheap, is the PW issue.

yeah theres a reason hes letting it go for $60. Multiple failed attempts, and then giving up :D
