It'll play DVDs, BFD IMO  It wont do HD, upscaling or anything else, so that's pretty useless to most of us.

Haha.... Now wait for how including a Movie Player in a console is an innovation ;)...
Make sure you don't drop the remote, or fiddle with it while watching... You may wind up fast forwarding :)

Well I knew this right from the start when they mentioned that highest res that they will support is 480p.

Kinda disappointing that you will not be able to eventually upgrade to the newer platforms like hd-dvd. I think the big N is more focused on gaming though, they have already stated before that they are not all the interested in the media side of things.
I also think they will be more focused on the online side of things this time around, since they screwed that up with the Gamecube.
I plan to wait it out on all platforms this year, maybe even next year. I just want to see what direction the big 3 go in as far as development, etc.

Didn't think this was a big secret since it was mentioned that it would play DVD's for quiet some time now and knowing it was limited to 480p wasn't a big suprise since its not aiming for high def.
Meh. I have a DVD player. I care not. :-/
Argh, I was hoping for something good. O well. You cant have it all ...

Yea, who in this day and Age doesn't have a DVD player.. but can afford a Gaming console..
It's a GAMING Console, not a DVD Player.
The wii will do what it's designed for best. And it is designed to play Games.

fine with me. if i want hd-dvd, i'll get a hd-dvd player. as of now i have no interest in high-def television or movies so whatever. my 27" crt sd-tv is fine.
and with that, i'm picking the Wii over the other two.
I dont have a dvd player for my TV, just another reason for me to pick up a WII! Sweet!!
I like as few things and wires as possible, so having my Wii play DVD's is a bonus, since I'm not in to HD or any of that jazz.
EDIT: At least for now, however, this feature will only be available in the Japanese market "There are currently plans to release a version of Wii in Japan featuring DVD playback, [but] there are currently no plans to bring this model to Europe or the US," a Nintendo spokesperson reportedly said.
Well, it doesn't seem like a "BIG" secret, and I don't think this is it, since it won't be hitting the US / Europe.

Correct me if I am wrong, but won't the Wii be uncompatable with HD-TV's? As in you wont get HD quality with the Wii? I personally don't care, but I'm just confused: isnt 480p a HDTV resolution?

You are correct. The Wii will not be HDTV compatible. It's one of the downfalls, but to keep costs low, I think this is a good move by Nintendo.

well sorta. incompatible is a bad term, as it will still play, but either in letterbox (black sides) or stretched.
I plan to play with it on my DELL 2407FPW :D

Well you see it CAN play DVDs... you just can't WATCH DVDs. They aren't actually going to include a player... Just the drive.
I've been thinking that the whole DVD playing problem could pro'lly be solved later in the console's lifeline with a kernel upgrade. The Wii uses a Linux-based OS, so it might be possible.
They aren't bringing the model that plays DVDs outside of Japan, btw.

I have about as much desire to watch DVD movies on a Wii as I do my PDA or Laptop...
I can also create documents on my PDA and print them though my Wireless should I choose to do so yet there are better tools available to do this such as my PC.
I will pay games on my Wii
Create documents on my PC
Play DVD's with my DVD player
nothing changes in my life....

2 birds with one stone..... sure many of you are aware of it, not everyone can afford individual tools for each job.

Lucky you (and I) to have all those devices. But when I first came to paris all I brought with me was a laptop with a busted dvd drive and a guitar. So when I finally got my PS2 over here, it was wonderful.
Sure I could only play American DVDs... but it was better than nothing.

Maybe Mommy and Daddy don't want little Jimmy to have a DVD player in his room, 'cause his friend little Billy has a Daddy that leaves naughty films out for easy access.
Like others have said: I have a DVD player already, I have a PC already. I have a Wii for games.
And what does a DVD player go for now? $50? I can head into Wal-mart and pick one up and not leave much of a dent in my pocket. If little Jimmy wants a DVD player, he can mow some lawns.
Edit: Oops, my bad. They're only $30 (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4529480).

Speaking of which... do you HAVE said Wii yet? And if you did... what games could you play with it? It occured to me slightly after you won it. Hee! :)
I'll pro'lly end up getting my Wii shortly after the launch date. It'll pro'lly be shipped on the 20th, and I should have it by the end of the week.
I'll be heading out on the 19th to pick up Twilight Princess Wii and RedSteel, along w/ another Wiimote and Nunchuck.
I also have my old library of GC games to hold me over if they're out of those titles, and Wii Sports ;)

Playing DVDs isn't important, but if it can do it with some software it would be nice if they enabled it to do so.

I have an external Toshiba DVD player....but with the consoles eating up my video inputs...it would be nice to have a console thats ready to play progressive scan DVD out of the box with a remote...and I can free up another input on my TV. There's nothing magical about DVD technology anymore, you should be able to integrate DVD playback on a new console with digital sound out and progressive scan just as good as a stand alone player. Id like to see it on the Wii...it's not a selling point but I'd like to see it.
edit: Ok I was just looking at a walkthrough video for Metroid 3 for Wii...I never knew the nunchuck was capable of motion detection along with the wii-mote. Thats awsome! Wii FTW!!!

^ another good point, not everyone has a million input jacks and dont want to spend more money on a splitter box
for some people $30 more can add alot to a price tag for something little jimmy has already been saving up for all summer :)

If they can afford the console they can afford to take the time out to switch input jacks around. Some inputs are on the front of DVD players and TVs along with other hardware in a home theatre system if they have one.
If not its not like its hard to disconnect a piece of equipment your not using. Sure it might be a hassle but it will speed up your desision to get a box to easily do it.

So, once again, I am confused.
The Wii CAN play DVD's, just not in the US?
I mean, I don't care-we have at least 1 DVD player in every room of the house (I count DVD burners as DVD players :D ) but it MIGHT be a selling point for those who dont want to deal with so many A/V cables.
But I don't want to find out that the Wii can play DVD's if you buy a new version of it a year later...When I get my Wii, I would LIKE everything RIGHT THEN! I guess I'm picky that way...
So what EXACTLY is the deal with Wii + DVD?
The ability for the Wii to play DVDs will only be available on later versions of the console, and even then only in Japan. It's not being enabled for the North American market, or any other market. Just Japan.

Adding sprinkles without high cost is always a great thing.
By the time high def discs are mainstream. Most won't care if a humble console can play them or not. Long as there is a good selection of what it can do, is out, and cheap. It is not the first few thousands that make the money. It is a couple of years down the road. Look at the PS2, it still has very brisk sales. And it is a DVD player console.
Long as it does what it is supposed to do at a cheap price, more sales. Hard to pass up a $129(US) console with TONS of games. I think Wii will take the PS2 spot over time. It has fun features and looks to be kind of comparable in features. Wii has the cool controller. Lets see about the content later on...

So lets hope the console is easy to hack, I couldn't really care less about DVD playback, but the idea of enabling hidden features makes me want one even more.

Indeed having the feature would be nice, but as well isn't "nessisary".

I think it would be possible, in all honesty. The Wii runs a proprietary version of GNU/Linux (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/08/1754219), so I honestly think that the big N could enable lots of features via kernel upgrades and software downloads. It's going to be interesting to see what they can do with it in the future.

Lets just hope that the DVD player won't cost $$$ to download...that would suck...
