I have a Abit vt6x4. At some point I want to upgrade to 800 cpu with 100 fsb. My question is will these slot 1 cpu's continue to decrease in price or does there come a time when they start getting scarce and the price starts going up. I realize I could get slot kit and use a fcpga but do these perform as well? Can they be overclocked as well? TIA

Hi belorsch,
Personally I don't hink that the prices of this kind of Cpu's will continue to decrease, coz these particular chips with Fsb@100Mhz are made in 'small' quantities to satisfy the request of 'old' system with BX Mobos, but onestly I must say that the US market is totally different from EU (here are totally or very very diffcult to found!).
I'll go with a P/// 1Ghz or 1.1Ghz E series, preferribly in FCPGA slot coz with newer Stepping Revison that easly OC, like you can check into other posts, and not with the 800's for the higher multiplier and 'lower' Stepping revision.

This is just my point of view :)

personally I'd say buy now- the prices will likely be going up, not down, as Intel ramps down production and they get scarcer.

In my experiance, the Slot CPUs OC just as well as the Socket style chips BUT- it's much harder to find a decent Slot1 heatsink than a good Socket heatsink. I had to figure out a way to put a good HSF on my Slot1 700E, after that I got it to 1050 no problems. If you can do that, go for the slot. If not, grab a slotket and a socket CPU instead. There is no performance hit from using a slotket instead of a genuine Slot CPU. I've run a C566@995 on a slotket for quite a while, and the mobo think's it's just a slot-style CPU to begin with.

They will be availible for quite a while, but I bet they won;t get cheaper. So might as well but now.

cool side note- did you know that only recently did AMD discontinue it's line of 486 CPUs? Yup, they been making them for over 10 years and only just quit. so styff will always be availible:)
