View Full Version : To many fans for my 400Watt?

I have a 400Watt power supply I don't who made it but it is P4 compatible and has temp control and vareing fan speed.

My case can fit 2 power supplys ( I would probably use a old 250Watt for the fans one with the switch to put at the front of the case if I had to....)

I will have 6x80mm 45cfm 3000rpm (30.5db) fans, a Northbirdge cooler 2 delta's!!! @ 7 volts a G-card cooler a Hdd cooler and 3 card blowers!! There all silent and theres lots as I don't want 5 Delta's!!!

I'm thinking with a 1900+ XP will it be to bigger strain on the PSU? If so should I use a seperate 250Watt (or 200) (ith a switch on the front so I don't have to mod it to turn on) PSU?, if so will this be enough for the fans?
However I thought the 400Watt one would be ample, I will check the 5V line but I wanted your opinions....

Cheers!

A 400W should be plenty to run those fans off, unless you have a lot of HDDs (a lot being more than say 4-5).

I have a 60gig MATOR a 12x Creative DVD 12/10/32 Creative CD-RW and a 52x CD!!!

I'd recommend using a second PSU unless it's an exceptional 400 watt PSU you're already using. If you don't use every drive at once and use voltage hacks, a single 400 watt PSU may suffice. I'd still recommend using two since you have the room, though

All your fans total at mosy 50W, the drives use 25W tops each, that;d be 125W, leaving 275W for the cpu / etc. the whole mobo, cpu, etc use maybe 150W unless you are voltmodded heavily in which case they might use 200W. So even with everything running full (which doesn't usually happen) you have plenty of power.

Your all contadicting yourselfs!!!!

The PSU has only one fan and never even gets above "warm" if that helps, it looks really well made though.
What should my 5v line read for good stability?

The only thing about using a second PSU is I would have to loose a 80mm fan (above the old psu its a BIG BIG CASE) and it could generate extra heat...

Yes but then the PSU "generates" heat.

fit one of your better fans in it then, it does make a small ammount of heat but because of it's position in the case the heat will stay at the top and not affect anything else in the case

Well then we have an answer!!!!!

Should I use an older PSU with a switch as I don't wanna go modding my new 400Watt psu, well any ideas?
The only prob with a switch is that is might not fit in one of the plates on my new case, it has a door remember!!!

how about a filck swich in a drive bay?

Thats what I meant (sticking out the front of the plate) but the door won't close because of the size!!!

Hey if we ramble on a bit more you'll be up to 1000!!! Well Done:D

if your hands steady thingie worked in tec then you could use that to wire it up to your swich so it tuyrned on both and left the 2nd one on

No its totally wrong!!!

Is there any other way I could power it up with the rest of the system?

I will use the 400Watt PSU for the CPU though just in-case I forget!!!

Use a relay hooked to the 12V lines of your 400W PSU to switch it on.

How can I do this?

I need to be guarrenteed that it will work, and if its a 200watt or a 250watt can I power all my drives as well as the fans???

Or would that cause instability, I had problems before using a 250watt for my whole system- wouldn't burn cds...

Yeah I suppose...

Ya know, The power supplies that are in external enclosures would be a perfect choice for fans. Its a 65watt power supply. and its really small. Its just a thought.

Or you can use an external 12V power supply from radio shack and go to town with your fans. Make a special connector just for it.... Hmmmmm....

I don't really get what you mean, I live in the UK as well so could you post some pics of the power supplys?

Sounds like a cool idea:p

try www.allelectronics.com they have a lot of very powerful psus (non computer) that are pretty cheap
