hi, my GF is looking for a laptop to replace her anceint PII-300 desktop. and she's agree to let me run SETI on it whenever she's not using it (which will be at least 20hr/day :D ).

now, my question is the new PIII-M(obile) faster or the Athlon4?? i know, the Athlon4 is a palomino core, which it should be pretty fast for SETI. however, i also heard that the new PIII-M is much faster than the old core, and probably faster than the t-bird in same speed??

which one should i look for?? we've found 2 laptop w/ (almost) same price, same RAM, same DVD/CD-RW combo drive, same amount of hard drive space. just either a PIII-M 1G or a Athlon4 1G??

any suggestion??

btw, i "might" get myself one too later. but i might get a PIII-M 1.13G if that's faster than a Athlon4 1G. 'cos i don't think AMD has anything faster than 1G for laptop yet.....

tks in advance!! ;)

Clock for clock it's been my experience that AMD is quite a bit faster than Intel in SETI.

Alot depends on the chipset of the motherboard that's in there too but I can't see a 1GHz PIII, unless it's a Tualatin, beating a TBird mobile 1GHz at all.

yeah, the PIII-M is a Tualatin core, and so do the Athlon 4 is a Palomino core. 'cos i've heard the newer Tualatin core is pretty fast! much improved than the coppermine..

i know a PIII (coppermine) is nowhere near the performane of even a T-bird! not talking 'bout the Palomino core!!

but what i'm interested is how 'bout the new PIII-M Tualatin compare to the new Athlon4 Palomino???

The mobile chip also has 512K L2 cache like the server version. The testing I've done here puts the P3S slightly ahead of the Palomino core clock for clock with Seti. I reiterate slightly because often it's not more than about 15 minutes per WU. From a stand point of buying a laptop, the P3M is a hell of a lot more energy efficient. That's one feature AMD has yet to get a clue about. I love my Dell, and if I had to buy a laptop today I would still go for a P3M.

TC: i saw ur sig u have a PIII-M 1.13 that's the one i'm looking for myself. what's the WU time on it??

yeah, battery life in quite important on laptop. i guess i'll tell her to go for the PIII-M 1.0G than.... what's ur guesstimate of WU time on it??

i don't know the PIII-M has 512k L2 cache on it like the server version. it should help quite a bit on SETI and most application than. tks for comment.

also, tks for ur input too, Jon.

Don't keep up with laptops much and didn't realize they were making such powerhouses out of them. Makes sense considering the Tualatin runs at a lower voltage though.

I'd probably go with the PIII in that case too then.

My laptop usually averages high 5 to low 6 hour range. I'd guess the 1GHz would be mostly in the mid 6 hour range. The large cache makes a big difference, especially with laptops because the memory sub system is not as fast as a good desktop machine.
