View Full Version : [SOLVED] Dilectric or not???
I have recently received a Eheim 1250 pump from the USA which is 115v 60Hz the only problem is in Australia we use 240v 50Hz, now I can purchase a stepdown tranformer to achieve this but I am not exactly sure which one I need, I can get a dilectric one for $100 or a non dilectric one for $50, from what the Jaycar catalog recomends they say use the dearer one when the secondary device is being used in or around water, whats your thoughts?
as they say in the tropics *BUMP*

Wow, I didn't know you used 240 there...In the U.S. we sometimes use 220 for stoves and such, but...
I say go with the "safe" one...
What do your outlets (wall outlets)look like down there?
Very simular to the us one the top 2 pins are the same just different earth.

Don't bother with the extra cash for the dielectric version...it's weatherproofed and that's not something you'll need. Shell out 50 bucks and get el cheapo. On another note, running a 60hz motor at 50hz will yield a RPM decrease of approximately 1/6th due to the lower frequency not changing the field in the motor as quickly, thereby slowing it down some. Not a big deal. You don't even have to worry about this. I only said it FYI so just ignore it if the thought of a 5/6 speed motor bothers you. The volume of the pump will be minimally affected.
I'm using the Eheim 1250 which does 1200 litres an hour so I dont think it should be a big problem.
