just started wow; got game for $20 at best buy; enjoying it a bit, but have a few questions; and the other question i have is if i should try guild wars as well? is it a different experience that i might enjoy or more of the same? anyone prefer one or the other? obviously there's the monthly fee i'd like to avoid; but wow has so much public acceptance i feel i should give it a shot; so far it's rather slow, but i imagine things will pick up; i don't plan to get the expansion for awhile since i just started playing; i'm not one to get addicted, so i'm not worried about that, but i hear stories about HAVING to put in 4hours of gameplay to complete one quest; i can't do that; i hardly play for half hour at a time now, and when school starts it will be less; i hear GW is "lighter".. so that interests me; but i've loved blizzard games forever so hard to drop this one

oh, and here's the one thing:
1. i need a microphone; i have lots of great headphones (for music mostly) so i don't want a "headset", i want to use my own headphones; but can i get say a little mic to sit on my desk? something i could maybe use with wow, css, even skype? right now i'm just using onboard sound, but in the future i'm going to be getting an external DAC/headphone amp for my music i'd like to use, and i'm hoping i'll still be able to plug a microphone into the mic on the motherboard at that time....but i digress

anway, just wanted to hear y'all's thoughts; i've never played an MMO before and i find it quite interesting, though the lack of PLOT, storyline, or endgame does baffle me a bit

oh yeah, and after playing a few different characters i've settled on a night elf druid; i've no idea what's good and what's not so let me know if i've made a mistake :) the idea of turning into birds etc. seems very cool; i've got about 3weeks left on the free month before i have to start paying, and it looks like the cheapest i can get is a 2month card at best buy for $20

ok.....done talking :)

if u can play wow for only half an hr then mad props to you..

it got me like crack for a bit over 6 months then i had to go cold turkey on it cause it was interfering with my life too much.

i have friends who played GW and WoW and so far they liked WoW more. And you are right WoW has a lot of subscribers so its a Huge community. I would keep playing with that for now.

by the way. Some quests are quite lengthy so you will have to play for more than 30 minutes at a time further down the road. If you get high enough in the game you will have 'raids' or multiple person quests taking up 5-6 hrs :o

ok, yeah; i think i'll grab a used copy of GW sometime just to check it out since there's no price of admission; what is it about wow that's addicting? is it leveling up or getting more and more loot? maybe once i actually get rolling into the game i'll need the IV put in :)

oh and i see you go to college in seattle? do you go to U-dub? i was just driving up through north cali, oregon, and washington to canada, road tirpping and checking out universities for grad schoo; UW is my current favorite; got there on game day; vs. oregon state; dig seattle.....and now i'm off topic again :)

GW = good PvP + weaker PvE

This pretty much sums it up.

Like others have said, WoW is fun, but it gets addicting. You get something good and you find yourself wanting more. It's amazing what blue and purple items do to some people. One thing I liked about WoW was the ability to explore, even dangerous areas if you played it right. If you wanted to jump off a mountain you could, you might die, lol..but you had the option to do it. I also found WoW customer support to be terrible. Good luck getting Blizz if you need phone support.

Guild Wars lacks the option to explore, its more like a rpg (to me), you run into invisible walls here and there. Guild Wars has a great support system though, the game is almost updated daily.

WoW has a fun pvp, but it turns into a easy grind, to easy. Guild Wars pvp is more about competition and working together, in WoW people seem to try and solo a lot, or hide and grind honor points.

If you do decide to stick with WoW, you chose a very wanted class, people are ALWAYS looking for Druids, especially good Druids, where as classes like Hunters and Rogues are in less demand. Whatever class you choose, just pick one that is fun to YOU, popular or not.

Again like stated before, it is addicting. Like Lt. Max said, he had to quit cold turkey, I had to do the same. I was forgetting about the important things in life, like job, family, friends, etc.

Oh, and yes some quest in WoW can take awhile, same in Guild Wars, but end-game in WoW can also be frustrating, especially end game raiding. Be ready to spend 3, 4+ hours doing end-game dungeons.

YIKES; huh, thanks; it's really amazing to me that this game is so addicting to folks; wild; i'm gonna give GW a try at the end of the month; i could see this game not working out for me if i had to be doing a certain amount at a certain time

I think you would like Guild Wars. One thing I also like about it is if you didn't want to get a actual real life group, you could grab some AI team members to help you quest. Graphics are nice, game play is fun. The in game community has a few kiddies, but that's to be expected with an game. When I mention kiddies, I mean the immature ones :), but WoW had it's share of them to, epecially in world chat, ouch.

Since it doesn't sound like you're looking for a game to give your life over to, you'll probably like Guild Wars pretty well.

With what I am looking for in games, I like Guild Wars better than WoW. It has more solid mechanics and and variety in combat possibilities while still having excellent balance. The storyline is good and is added on to more frequently with the new chapters. PvP is also very good, far better than WoW. It's easier to play casually, and doesn't cost a subscription fee. Overall, it's a lot more stimulating mentally for me working on various character builds and such where WoW is simple and you just keep playing to improve rather than by being creative.

WoW is more social and big enough to pour playing time into days at a time. It's very oriented around eliminating frustration (very carebear) and is pretty solo friendly. It's a very easy to enjoy for most people.

I had pretty much stayed away from WoW and played other games up until my wife got into WoW, so now I play it with her. I still think those other games are better and more fun for me, but playing together with someone like that makes a giant difference.

I recently bought Guild Wars and would have to say its pretty good to play and doesn't require insane amounts of time. Its kind've like diablo, but an MMO. When you go and do quests and everything you're in a world thats created just for you, you can invite people to come in and adventure with you or you can just wander round and have a blast yourself... :)

Guild Wars is weak in the story department.

The PVE ends up being all about farming and collecting weapons and armor for their leet skins.

The PVP has a big learning curve, but can be a lot of fun. Especially with the fact that everyone is pretty much on equal grounds where the only things that affect the outcome of battles are your skillbar and your skills at the game.

GW is a great alternative to WoW if you don't want to feel obligated to play it cuz of the monthly fee. However, WoW has a TON MORE CONTENT so you're still getting what you pay for.

WOW: Time put into the game = better items/equipment

GW: Regardless of time put into game skill is all that matters in pvp

Personally i like wow because i feel that upgrading equipment and such is important and fun. I found gw to be very boring after i got the lastest gear since there was nothing to do.

The story is a bit iffy.. I agree with that.. It does get boring after the first time going through it.. But its still a good game for a everty now and then play after you beat it once. And it requires no monthly fee's!

Same as WoW if you ask me.

I started on Guild Wars because of the lack of fees, but after playing the WoW trial I find it to be the better game. The instanced levels in Guild Wars make the world feel lifeless outside of town, WoW's open world is much more appealing to explore. WoW isn't as pretty, but the rewards for the time you put in are greater.

But in GW, the highend armors are just as good as the cheap ones, but look different. So people try to impress their buddies with it.

In WoW (so Ive heard) you have to do farming and a lot of spending just to survive against others/monsters.

WoW pwns Guild Wars because of one simple fact - you can jump :D

Personally, I think the story in GW is much more interesting than WoW...at least in terms of playing a game for the story.

The story in WoW is generally all about the state of the world as it currently exists. You're not really a part of time moving along with events occuring. Sure, there's some back story and such that you can learn and some atmosphere to be gained from the quests, but plot line....plot line practically doesn't exist.

GW on the other hand, you are part of a real story with world changing events taking place. I actually play the game and want to see what happens next. In fact, I have yet to see an MMORPG type game have a stronger plot line...it's more along the lines of the story in a good single player game. It also has an aspect of being able to travel backwards in the storyline by just going to an old area. Kinda neat.

Of course the story doesn't last forever, just like a single player game. You have to wait for the next chapter...which so far comes out fairly frequently.

Also, I don't think the later game is much about farming/grinding for elite skins...they aren't even any better, just look different. You can do it if you want to, but it's not a big deal at all. It's really more about playing all the classes, unlocking all your PvP possibilities for skills and items, playing different types of characters with different tactics, etc. If you play the game like a full time job, you can run out of things to do in a chapter...but I don't want to play a game that much, I do have a life. And, there are more chapters and even other games I want to play, too.

I've been playing GW for over 16 months and loved PvE every day. Now Anet completely screws up PvE by releasing a horrible update that affects all chapters, i would only recommend GW for PVP.

That's where people are wrong.

WOW = classic/ordinary MMOs' mindless grinding PvE with a mask of "quest" but still the same + silly pointless so called PvP(fake).

If you actually played more than a few MMOs, you'd find a million other MMOs have the same type of PvE long before WOW were ever developed. (in fact, there is NO such thing as fun PvE in current MMOs)

And more than a few MMOs have much much better true PvP.

If you want to play fun PvE, go grab Neverwinter Nights. If you want to play fun PvP, go grab Lineage2.
I have Castle Siege videos from Lineage 2 in the link below in my sig. That is real(not fake) PvP. Where hundreds organized players' army try to defend a player owned castle from hundreds organized attacking forces of players. And every area is a part of the world where you can walk to.

WOW's "PvP" offers what? A big arena where is isolated and seperated from the rest of the world, where you can't even walk to, where you can fight the people you don't even know forever for...what? Oh I forgot they named it "battleground"...making me laugh...or you can go "duel" people all day long for what? Or you can go kill opposite races who you don't even know for ... what...or do most people even still do that?

That only means you enjoy slashing/hacking away on the same spot on the same 3 mobs who will respawn every 30 seconds. And repeat that for the rest of your game.

Wow= People that don't really like PvP, if you die in PvP, you loose nothing if you aren't in a battle ground.

GW= It has real PvP.

You lose nothing from dying anywhere inside WOW, not just inside battleground.

And their fighting is pointless to begin with. BG = one isolated arena, with no goal, no point of why fighting, nor even you know who you are fighting with. Just mindlessly fight, die, fight, die, fight, die, repeat 1000000 times and end up with nothing really changed for you nor for your enemies, nor for the world.

Organized Castle Siege is the way to go for MMO warfare.

wow is hard in the end? im in GW nightfall and been stuck on the second to last mission for four days, its only been out for less than two weeks, i finish stuff fast... :) (i only do the primaries of course)

GW is impossible when you dont have a team, i love GW but nightfall is real tough, it might just be because i made a new char instead of using my tank, i dunno

Im sorry it forces you to use different tactics instead of Tanks, monks, nukers and minion masters.

If i were to use these "Different Tactic's" to farm enough shards/ectos for FoW i would have to farm for over 6 months straight 24/7 no sleep.. no rest.. im sorry but i have no time for that bs, if you do gl with that.

SteveLord

I dont farm. FoW is a totally optional part of the game and SHOULD be difficult and exhausting to obtain the armor from it. You're spending hours upon hours just so you can have a different skin of armor (that isn't even that rare or cool anymore to have)

So thats that.

GW as a game isn't meant to be farmed. It's purposely designed and has been modified over time to discourage farming...vastly more so than other MMORPG's that might make the same claims. It's about competition and challenging player skill based play instead of quantity of time based play.

I haven't played the new AI yet, but if it improved monster AI, great. It just makes the game more fun, and GW has always had better AI than most other games. And, if smarter monsters make it harder to farm, also great.

Farmers screw up the game economy for regular players. In order to keep from oversaturating the economy with rare items that are being farmed, those rare drops have to be made much less frequent. Farmers get those rarified drops and regular players don't....because they're not farming! If farmers stop farming because it's too hard, then drop rates will be increased because the economy will be undersaturated and regular players can start getting the drops.

personally I like wow. I am more of a Pve person, but I like the pvp in wow, I think it is a lot of fun, for me I like not losing anything when you die. I really like the 40man raid content. Getting from 1-60 wasnt to bad and can be done pretty quickly. I really like the content updates wow has. I have been playing for a little over a year and have still not done all the end game content. (currently working of C'thun and Faerlina)

in regards to mics, go to your local officedepot best buy or compusa and spend $10 on a cheap desk mic, they work great, thats what I used for a long time
