the only dead C2D's i've heard of are from people removing the IHS.

You went though an entire butane lighter and don't think that heat had anything to do with it?
The only heating methods Ive seen advised (by people that had working CPU's after the procedure) is using the processor itself

Considering it was one of the first Intels to be sodered on, that might have been the CPU proved that fact.

Because if you can get that sucker off cleanly and strap a Phase change unit on that core, your temps will be.. well... just slightly better than they would be with the heat spreader...
