I came into possession of a PIII 1 GHz machine with 512 MB that I'd like to set to crunching, so I installed an unused legal copy of Windows 98, but BOINC will not run without Internet Explorer 5 or higher and this install has IE 4. (I tried Opera and Firefox but still get the same error message)
If I go to upgrade IE all I get is IE7 which will not install on Win 98. Is there a way to update Win 98/IE4? Microsoft seems to no longer support this OS.
Failing that, can I modify BOINC to use another browser like opera?

I found a website that lets you download an options pack, claims to be like a service pack. But, lucky for you, has IE6, and a few other goodies. dont know if it works, dont have a copy of 98 to try. http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4738

I pm'd you a linky for ie6. I don't suppose you could do that for me, too? I'm gonna' be in the same boat for a few weeks (running 98SE on a new machine) until I get another copy of XP Pro. Never thought about IE holding me back. :-/
I'm hoping I can get it tested and running before the race is over - still waiting on the MB from Monarch ...

Didn't think about ME - I actually have a copy of that around, hmmm.
Unlike a lot of people I didn't have many problems with ME. Ran it for 3 years w/out re-installing or anything else but I must admit at the end of 3 it was starting to slow down. When I re-built the system for the wife & others I went back to 98 for the dual-boot because it runs most of the games that XP won't. ME is such a bastardized version I had a couple of problems getting Win98 games to run ...

If it is just a stand alone cruncher you could drop Linux on it. If you don't need windows on it I mean.

During the last race somebody made a Bootable CD which contained the OS and an optimized Boinc Seti client.
Insert CD, turn on the PC and it was crunching for the race with nothing installed on the box.
Very cool stuff.

Borgix might do that. Talk to tollhousefrank or king_warg, one of them can probably help.
