Microsoft Capitulates on Vista Licensing Terms!

I just got off the phone with a couple of Microsoft reps, who told me that they’ve made a change to the Vista license to accomodate the enthuiast market. (If you’ve not been following this story, the original Vista EULA prohibited transferring a copy of Vista to more than one other machine, so frequent upgraders could have found themselves buying a new copy of Vista every third upgrade.)
The new license will be included with the retail boxes of Vista and will be posted online later today. It states: “You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices.”

///Will Smith

Sounds like the 'deactivation' we all ranted about it a reality!

Tigerdirect.ca is selling systems with a free copy of RC 2 installed.

Vista is still a little lacking for the price, but this changes me from 'will not buy' to 'I just might'.

Still won't buy unless they give me serious and compelling reasons to do so...

am i the only one who really wants the most basic OS? I mean i'd much rather have a really well working windows 95(yes i said it) then anything today. 90% of this functionality they add and all the bells and whistles i could really live without... sheesh.

No you're not. I hope all the frills can be disabled. I like the simplistic style of the pre-XP Windows. At least with XP you could disable a lot of that fancy garbage.

I see one reason and one reason only to get Vista. DX10. Other than that, XP can do anything I'd want to do.

Please don't flame me, but I would get Vista just because of the eye candy. I'm just one for that kinda stuff. Sadly, its way too expensive, and the functionality is not all that different from xp, but it looks damn nice.

Vista suddenly looks a notch or two more likeable now, with the DirectX 10 info (http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/11/08/what_direct3d_10_is_all_about/) I saw today, and the two Nvidia 8800 series DX10 articles from today. One (http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/11/08/nvidia_announces_geforce_8800/), two (http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/11/08/geforce_8800/).

Still not liking the hideous price of Vista though.

I don't mind bling bling here and there. But as long as it can be turned off or user-selectively excluded.

What annoys me more is the size of OSes these days. I just find it ridiculous that they're getting to be 7-10GB. Come on now. I'd like it if they made it like some versions of Linux, where you can pick and choose what you want to install so that you don't have any useless BS you'll never personally use taking up space.

While it would be nice to be able to choose the items you want to install, at the price per GB of HDD's today it's not worth it from MS's perspective. I mean really, what is 7GB out of 250? Or 320? Or 500? If you have to worry about how much space the OS takes up you are probably not the type of user that Vista is aimed at.

I don't mind the hard drive space that it takes up; I have plenty of that. I just think it says something about the OS. It comes off as being bulky and unwieldy and bloated to me.

Damn right it is bloated, would you keep buying a marginly tuned version of Win98TFE (Thirty Fifth Edition). 6 years ago when XP came out, everyone ranted and raved about how bloated XP was, now XP is the slim one, there is a new lard ass on the block. Just wait till Vista's replacement comes along, 25GB off of you 1.2TB HDD, OMG!

Getting better means getting 'bloated', it is called 'growth'. My dad is really a bloated 16 year old ;)

Go buy a Mac. :)

All: Remember that as computers get faster, software gets more bloated and slower. Vicious cycle. They develop a faster CPU for a PC so you can run Windows 98 faster, then out comes XP...and so forth.
