I plan putting a second computer together to run linux on it and will most likely built a celeron 900 (i first wanted to buy a used computer but it will cost me about the same to put a celery together!). My real question is; is a standard 250W PSU enough?

- Asus CUPLE-VM (i know, cheapo but also has a built-in VGA (Trident Blade3D) compatible with linux and since it's not to play games, that'll be alright)
- Celeron II 900
- 256MB ram PC133
- 5-10 GB hdd
- CDROM
- Floppy

Don't have lotsa things heh, so will 250W be ok?

Also, is the HSF that comes with the retail cpu ok (not only at 900, but higher)?

Cheers

i would go with an ST6 for the mobo, because not only will it take the Celly now, but you can upgrade to a Tualatin later on in life (1.13-1.4GHZ)....also i dont recommenc overclocking with a retail heatsink......i suggest you check out this heatsink with a 30cfm fan, or if you really dont care about noise a good socket 370 cooler is the http://www.svcompucycle.com/globwinfopw3.html...thats probably enough, adn will cost you less then 20 bucks shipped....otherwise, good choices

As long as it's a quality PS, it should be fine... as a matter of fact, even a crappo one should be fine with as little as you listed, but I wouldn't chance it... but why not get a 300W and plan for the future?
As for the heatsink, I can't answer that cuz I banished mine forever after using it on a 733 PIII. It worked fine stock, though, but I never dared to overclock it. :p

Thanks, i'll look for the ST6. As for the PSU, i guess i'll try the 250W and if something goes wrong, i have a brand new 300W sitting in my closet.

By the way, what's the usual temp of a celeron II?

Everyone has a different configuration so it makes the temps vary.
Maybe 40 - 44 full load with the stock.

If you have a 300w in your closet why not use that before getting another one? Since 300w is more powerful is it a generic brand?

Yeah, i will most likely use the 300W, it's a YoungYear electronics though

I came across the Asus TUA266 that supports the Tualatin, is it a good board? The Celly 1200 is a tualatin right? I might just buy the 1200 rather than the 900 too :D

i read some things about the ASUS, but it has DDR, and its just a waste because a Celerons 100mhz fsb will never use that kind of bandwith unless you get it up to 200fsb (fat chance)....the TUA266 is a waste of money and doesnt have the overclocking options of the ST6....

Actually, it has 3 SDR sockets and 2 DDR sockets, but the FAQ says it can't use Celeron (but do they mean CII, Celeron Tualatin, better to pass on this one!).

My local store (since i live in canada, most online stores won't ship here or it's just to expensive) has the following Tualatin ready mobo:

ST6-raid ($190)
Asus TUA266 ($150)
ECS P6S5AT ($98)
Gigabyte GA-6VEML ($103)

What's the best bang for the buck? I don't want to invest too much in it as it won't be my main machine, yet i don't want to put crappy hardware neither.

Thanks :D

i would go with the ST6, or the Gigabyte, also, if this is your second rig, it will be a kicking second rig...

Yep, second rig, my first being an Athlon XP 1700+ overclocked to 1900+.

Thanks for your advices, really appreciated!
