so what are some recommendations for a good set of desktop speakers for gaming and movies that is under 200 bucks?

80% of the time, i'm using headphones (sony v600) but when possible, ... ie roomates not around or sleeping ... i use desktop speakers.

any suggestions for sub 200 dollar systems?

What are you looking for, a 5.1 system?

i think so ... whatever works with an older soundblaster live! card. i think it's a live! 5.1 card and so that probably makes sense ...

Pending on the deals you can find, IMO, Logitech and Klipsch make the best sounding computer speakers. While many of them are pricier than $200, if you check on eBay or Craig's list you may be able to pick up a real bargain. Here is an example:

Movie wise, these are my favorites.

how's this as a *refurbuished* buy?

http://www.directron.com/ada995.html

directron's warehouse is right at the end of my street and so buying from them is fast.

also, would that system work with a soundblaster live! 5.1? i only have a single input and output on the card (as opposed to right front, right back, center, etc. as some onboard audio systems have)

The Altec Lansings generally are not quite as good as the Logitech's and the Klipsch, but they are fine and that is a great deal! I would jump on them in a flash. Yes, they should work with your card. I used an older set of Altec Lansing 5.1's with that same soundcard.

i just carried the heavy things in; directron has some good deals if you do warehouse pickup. i never mail order cause i can't stand the shipping.

Weight is good in speakers as it usually means bigger magnets, which is a good thing. You are lucky to have a warehouse so close to you. Good luck with them!
