for a DVD Burner, I don't know... I can't afford one. Regular DVD ROM i've had my Hitachi GD-2000 for 3 yrs now no problem, and now with my new Radeon... can we say CLEAR digital playback. hope that helped.

Personal experience: Pioneer! I bought the 106pioneer, the slot loading one and it rawks! I've been watching anime non-stop since and loving every minute of it! I have two other rl friends who also have pioneers that have told me the same.

Non-personally: I've heard good things about Toshiba's. They're cheaper and supposedly are great.

Toshiba are the leaders in home theatre stuff especially the top of the line stuff $1000+, but I dont know how their computer range is I am also looking for a DVD reader (contemplated a DVD-RAM for all of 2 minutes) at this point I would lean towards the Toshiba I figure they would share their technology but that's only a theory I will be interested to see what other have to say too.

I love my 19" Sony Trini, as for "regular" home audio/video you gotta get the "ES" stuff, it's among the best.

Do the toshiba come with the decoder built in or do they give you software with the decoder on it or do you have to buy one yourself?
Just wanted to make sure before I buy one so I don' t blow all that money!:burn:

I bought a 12x toshiba OEM drive that works flawlessly. It doesn't have hardware decoding though, but my gainward gf3 came with windvd 2000, so I'm all good.

I have a GD-2500 and the "low" speed doesn't hinder dvd movie playback at all. I have a geforce2 pro and with WinDVD the picture is wonderful.

I bought a generic DVD ROM at CompUSA about six months ago. I use Power DVD software decoder, and although I'm satisfied with the DVD performance, it no longer reads CD's.

I would suggest going with a major manufacturer. From what I see above, Toshiba looks good.

My .02

Good Luck!

why do people like that kind of cd-rom drive?? so eazy for dust to get in... yeah it may be faster to load a cd....But still.

first as u said FerrariF50 is easier to load second u are less likely to break the tray off.
yes m_mike_k u can buy the software separately but its cheaper to go for the OEM softs.usually u get them with vid cards or dvd drives(retail ones).

I was just wondering if they made those
I don' t think I will get that kind because my CD-RW does not have that kind of loading:burn:

For a drive I would go with a Pioneer. I got an AOpen that was supposed to be a slot load, but I got a tray instead. Make sure the drive is atleast 16x, then it will read CD's at 40x which is pretty decent if you are also going to be using it for CD's. WinDVD and PowerDVD are some of the best software out there and they come with almost everything. I got one with my old video card and the other with my drive. I wasn't real fond of the ATI stuff. Just make sure you get a retail drive (they aren't too expensive) and it will come with some form of decoding software. Some of the higher end cards (Radeon, and GF3) are supposed to have on board decoding, but it didn't work for me. The decoding software eats up some computing cycles, but you aren't going to be doing anything else while watching a movie, are you? Although playing solitare is pretty cool at the same time.

Hope this helps.
